Ooh! Oh, yes, that's a lovely example! Hope you were able to sell it for its true value.
Downsizing can be tricky for me as well. When I buy quality antiques I don't really need from a collector's standpoint, I think that I can sell them someday, although I haven't yet. Maybe that would be a good goal for me this year: try to sell an item, in which case I'll review Peter's tutorial on listing items on Ebay.
I had a seller tell me once that he doesn't put "fragile" on the outside of the box because he thinks the mail carriers intentionally try to break items like that. (Nevertheless he packed the dish I bought extremely well, constructing a cardboard ring on the inside of the box.)
I don't sell online but I have shipped pieces of art pottery overseas. I found that a small size disposable diaper makes a great "blanket" for such items along with the usual double boxing (either a regular box or one of makeshift construction ). You can also use a small styrofoam ice chest to give extra protection.
One thing that many sellers think helps but doesn't it using massive amounts of packing tape on the bubble wrap or paper around the actual object then making sure it is really, really tight. That too can cause breakage when trying to unwrap it. I have a piece of a reticulated plate edge that will testify to that. The skill set I have of untangling necklaces helps in working my way through a tape maze but not always.
If you do ship items be sure the address info is also placed inside the package as well.
Good to know!
The packing tape can get a little ridiculous. And although antiques are an earth-friendly recycled product, the packing material can be wasteful. I save some of it but I have a small place and don't ship items very often so the styrofoam and used bubble wrap often ends up in the garbage and recycle bin respectively.
I hate ghost turds. HATE THEM. Fortunately I live about two blocks from a UPS pack and ship so every once in awhile I bring them the ghost turds I've received from sellers. I don't know if all UPS stores will accept them but it is something to find out if you have one nearby and you also get a lot of stuff packed in ghost turds.
My dog lurves ghost turds. She will wait while I open a box in hopes some will fall on the floor. We work hard to spoil her fun.
Paula, I also just read on Google about zombie lurve. I too have taken packing materials with me to give to shipping store, but not sure they would take them now, but the grocery store still has the recycle barrell in the vestibule. Sharon
The shipping stores in my city do not accept them for recycling. Why? Because the city banned them. 🙄 As if they don't get shipped in to residents all the time. This policy just means more go in the landfill.
And when I first read Paula's post I had no idea what she was talking about. Googling "ghost turd" did not reveal "styrofoam peanuts". 😆
I think I will have to research this. I must admit that I was completely lost with the expression 'ghost turds' and other.
