Ok, this time I tried to make it harder. I asked ChatGPT (Artificial intelligence chat bot) to write a Sheaksperian sonnet for New Year's comparing art versus craft in Chinese porcelain. Like the last one, it spit this out in about 15 seconds. The robot apocalypse is upon us.
Art versus craft in Chinese porcelain
Shall I compare thee to a work of art?
Thou art more beautiful and rare than most,
With delicate brushstrokes and intricate design,
Thy beauty doth transcend all earthly cost.
But art, thou art a fleeting thing, it seems,
A fleeting moment of beauty in time,
Thy value rests upon the beholder's eye,
And fades as quickly as the fleeting rhymes.
Craft, thou art the foundation of art,
Thy skills and techniques long honed and refined,
Thou art the backbone that holds art aloft,
And ensures it shall stand the test of time.
So as the new year dawns upon us all,
Let us embrace both art and craft, the two,
For they together make our world more beautiful,
And bring us joy and wonder, anew.
Happy New Year, Kaolin
@lucky In fact I just bought a Republic piece that they had described as second half of the 20th century. It's the second time that happened to me and I don't browse on Catawiki very often. While last time no one was interested but me, this time there was another bidder who also recognized it for what it was, so it wasn't the holy grail, at least not financially. Will show it in a separate thread when it arrives.
Birgit
@shinigami Birgit, I do sell at Catawiki, when I am sure how pretty much I can expect to get for sure, as for a quick sale and quick funds...Otherwise, Catawiki is a Joke. Experts knowledge, is below average with no exceptions when it comes to experts...they are accurate, when it's obviuos what is it for sure..Nothing changed within last year. Kindergarden.
Birgit, I didn't change a word. In fact, you can run it as many times as you like and every time it comes out different.
@kaolin It's really fascinating.... thank you for sharing this
While I do not consider myself much of a poet (I dabble), it looks like the scructural format of the poem the AI spits out might resemble those of known poets, but its phrasing relies heavily on commmonly known metaphors, and mathematical formulas that determine ryhme and syllable patterns.... in other words, real poets kick AI ass when it comes to things like this.
Strangely, I think that what you've shown makes a very intersting metaphor for Chinese modern fakes that copy famous historical porcelains.
Happy New Year!
My wife and I rang in the new year in the comfort of our home - at our age, we appreciate a slow start to a new year.
Much of my day, yesterday, was spent researching the obscure history of soapstone carvers of the 17th c. (Zhou Bin, Zixiu, and Yang Yuxian). Not much is written on these artists, and only a dozen examples of work actually have shown up at auction, most by Zhou Bin, who may be the most famous of the group. So, my studies were mostly an exercise in futility, and it is at these times that I realize how much more there is to learn about Asian art.
So, I find myself reflecting on 2022, and with respect to my own limitations of knowledge, I wish to convey my sincere appreciation to everyone in our Forum group, especially those who have endured my often tough critiques. Although I have never made remarks with the intent of attacking another person's character or knowledge, I am as familiar as the next with the stinging sensation of hearing my personal beliefs on age, quality, and authenticity were in fact wrong. And truth be told, it is hard not to take it personal, at least a little bit.
As I am not much of a book reader, and so much of the indepth research into Chinese antiques is printed in obscure texts, not readily available, sharing knowledge via forum with others who have been involved with Asian art, some far longer than myself, has been an immeasurably important tool for my continued learning. So, thank you!
And for those who might still take offense to my directness, and perhaps see it as excessive nitpicking, let me acknowledge that I understand how it might rub others the wrong way. However, I do think that even if you fully disagree with a position I've taken, that contrarian discussion based on evidence and observation generally leads to a deeper understanding of truth. Respect.
So, with that, let me close with a quote about 'dating' that I just came across today from the famous collector, Robert Hatfield Ellsworth:
'Those who are optimistic in their dating, as they consider that the earlier an object is the more valuable it is, place value above knowledge and aesthetic beauty.' -- Robert Hatfield Ellsworth, Connoisseurship of Chinese Furniture in Hawaiian Collections

The art of calligraphy - and for the ancient Chinese it certainly was an art - aimed to demonstrate superior control and skill using brush and ink.
