Thought I would share with you all my latest purchase.
A 'Zhichuan' vase dated the the dingwei year that corresponds to 1967.
I believe it's from the masters series from the early 80's. 29.8cm high.
Was formerly offered at Bonhams Australia in December 2021.

Congratulations, on your purchase, Mark. I particularly like the trunk of the tree and the way the green is picked up on the clothing.
May I ask why is it a Zhichuan vase? I was assuming it is a reference to Zhichuan the early landscape painter and if so, is that meant to be him? They all look very sad, but all the sites I have looked at say very little about him.
Stunning quality, look at the tree trunk. I also like the details on the back, the stove and rooster.

If it wasn’t made in 1967, how was it decided that was the date implied by the inscription? Is it significant?

I just assumed from the higher quality that it was from the early 80's and not earlier.
Do you think it's correct date at 1967 and not later?
I was also puzzled by the Zhichuan description etc
This is the original lot at Bonhams Australia with said description.

As I said, I assumed it was 1967 and didn't pick up on your comment about the 80s until Birgit mentioned it. It seems odd that there would be 1967 in the inscription if it wasn't the actual year it was made, unless it had some relevance. I am sure Bonhams would have said if they thought it were later but there would still have to be a reason why it has that year in the calligraphy.
Congratulations Mark. take it from me, 67 was a good year, it is nice to know its previous sale history.
I don't know what Bonhams meant by Zhichuan but have no problem seeing it as made in 1967. Funny detail: the leaves are not quite as finely filled with color as the rest - the guy with the green brush seems always to be the apprentice.

I have no idea @julia.
Bonhams and other major houses if they are unsure of the inscription date/other will put said in the lower description. If they feel it's genuine/other they will put in bold within the bold description. Here they have simply described it as 'Famille rose 'Zhichuan' vase with no reference to the date in bold. But have done so in the general description.
Its something that they do. For example if they think a piece is genuine Republic period said wording in bold will be in the heading. If not they include it in the general description.
From my limited knowledge i know that during the very early 80's masters were making highly detailed porcelain for a limited time. Most were not signed.

Good point....I will ask a mutual friend what he thinks and what exactly Zhichuan is referenced too.
