You are probably not getting responses re: Chinese or Japanese regarding your screen due to the fact that generic landscapes without calligraphy are difficult to sort out. I personally have several Japanese landscapes that are in what the Japanese refer as “Nanga” or “Southern” style copying traditional Chinese landscapes from an earlier time that were so admired. At least several of mine have calligraphy stating Meiji year 8 or Taisho year 2 so that they can be identified as Japanese. Other clues may include artist names or even the type of mounting or a clue within the painting itself. You may sometimes see Japanese style paper on the back side of folding screens that identifies the origin.
After all that, I tend to think yours is Japanese as this type of folding screen or “Byobu” are commonly from Japan.

I have been meaning to post in here for a while but been so busy.
May I start by asking if this writing is Chinese or Japanese? I really like this scroll, the birds look very Chinese to me but given what George has said and the fact that I am not certain what language the characters are written in, I am wondering if it is.

It is 110" - the tape is weighing the end down. I am thinking of bidding on it.

Bada Shanren (born Zhu Da; c. 1626–1705) was a Han Chinese painter of ink wash paintingand a calligrapher. This signature appears on many paintings and porcelains and is honorary in nature. Painting has a “renshen” cyclical date probably 1932 or 1992. Otherwise, don’t see anything special about the art work so hope you won’t over pay if you intend to purchase it.

I have not seen it in person yet, I was just attracted by the birds' expressions and I do like the ink wash style. I will go and look at it but am going to take your advice and just look. More than that, I am going to look up this painter and enjoy some genuine examples.

What a fantastic idea to start a conversation about Chinese paintings. I must admit, I'm also quite intrigued by this art form and eager to learn more. It's wonderful to see such enthusiasm for exploring new artistic territories.
I've heard of Pearl Lam and her incredible contributions to the art world, particularly in promoting Chinese artists. Her insight into Chinese art must be invaluable, and I'm sure we could all benefit from learning more about her perspective.
As for your recent purchase of a Chinese painting, congratulations! It's always exciting to add a new piece to your collection, especially when delving into a new genre. I'm sure once it arrives, it will spark some fascinating discussions here. Do share a picture when it arrives—I'm sure many of us would love to admire it and perhaps offer some insights.
