Hi Craig, It is a good book, good examples, but if you could choose one i think Chinese Export Ceramics by Rose Kerr is the one to choose, very detailed descriptions and photos. Gerald Davison's book is also kind of a must have.

Michael
@nmh Especially essential if you plan to make it a business, buying and then selling or if you are curating your legacy of a truly great collection, which I very much appreciate seeing the great pieces shown on the forum, whether a business purchase or as a personal treasure. Sharon
Thanks, Michael. Export ceramics aren't really my cup of tea (or tea cup?) but I'll look for that 5,000 Years book to add to my collection.
I like the stepchild of the Chinese antiques, try collect as many and as possible of them.
Michael
Hi all,
I also love the "stepchild of Chinese antiques." The subject of Chinese (and Japanese, of course) export porcelain is incredibly interesting to me, and I've never quite understood the diminished demand or purported lower quality compared to Chinese domestic wares. I just wanted to chime in on some other book recommendations since Steve mentioned a lack of scholarship. Here's are my unsolicited book recommendations on the subject in no particular order:
1) For 19th century export porcelain, Nancy Schiffer's "Chinese Export Porcelain: Standard Patterns and Forms, 1780 - 1880" is a great resource for demonstrating the wide range of shapes that were specialized for the Western market. I'd never heard of a trembleuse or a trefoil tray before this book! It gives great insight into the function of novel shapes. It's mostly a reference book, in my opinion.
2) Nancy Schiffer's "China for America: Export Porcelain of the 18th and 19th Centuries" is a great read that delves a little deeper into special order export porcelain for America, like armorials, monograms, masonic & political subject matters, marine subject matters (my favorite), and others. It also attempts to categorize the "types" of eagle decorations found on American market pieces, but I thought it was a tough sell.
3) Jean McClure Mudge's "Chinese Export Porcelain in North America is my favorite for this area. It dives deeper into trade history, which I thought was incredibly interesting to read about. Also has the benefit of being mostly in color!
4) Elinor Gordon's "Collecting Chinese Export Porcelain" is a great read too. It's broken down into subject matter of decorations (floral, underglaze blue, mythological and religious, etc., and includes the intended country market for each piece. Great for a broad introduction to export porcelain in general from a famous dealer's perspective.
5) Elinor Gordon's "Chinese Export Porcelain: An Historical Survey" is a good read too if you're interesting in the development of the scholarship in Chinese Export Porcelain in general. It's a collection of articles written in various editions of ANTIQUES Magazine, development of the understanding of this field, including topics like why export porcelain used to be erroneously attributed to Lowestoft, and why it was called Oriental Lowestoft.
6) The Victoria and Albert Museum's "Chinese Export Art and Design" is a great read if you're interested in export in general, including silks, lacquer, furniture, carvings, metalworking, wallpaper, and paintings.
7) Arlene Palmer's "A Winterthur Guide to Chinese Export Porcelain" is a nifty little book, and is a short read. Majority of the text is in first sixth of the book, but its packed with references to photos of pieces in the museum so you'll be tabbing back and forth a lot.
8) The book I'm most excited about but haven't gotten around to reading is Patrick Connor's The Hongs of Canton: Western Merchants in South China 1700-1900. It's an art historian's in depth look at the development of China trade with the west through the lens of Chinese export paintings. My copy is coming in next week (I hope), but it looks really promising. Here's a video of the author on his book:
These are just the few books I've purchased in this area, but I also heard great things about David Howard Sanctuary and John Ayers's "China for the West" two volume book series. I haven't been able to get my hands on it, but I think it's one of the leading books in this field.
Starting out and deciding whether to spend your budget for Asian Art on books or actual pieces is difficult, but I feel like I'll have a better understanding of what I come across, and what I hope to acquire. I hope this wasn't too long-winded.
John
Some great books in your list, I will try to get some of them. Thank you John !
Regards,
Michael
