@shinigami It really has tremendous visual energy! The luster is so polished....it reflects everything around. Yet, it's so black that it looks like an empty space in the shape of a bowl. I think you've got a bowl shaped blackhole....it's fantastic!
Thank you all for your opinion! Yes, it’s absolutely black, not brownish but it’s not the hard black of a modern fake, at least in my opinion. I have asked Peter about it and will let you know what he says.
Birgit
@shinigami I think the bowl is quite old, too! It does appear it has been very much appreciated for its beauty its whole life, but the quality, and likely age, can be seen in the foot.
@Greeno107 said it well. That's the magic of old black glazes. In person they have a depth to the blackness and the glossiness pulls your hands toward the event horizon. The little colored blobs you see with a loupe are the dark matter. 😆
Beautiful piece, Birgit and for a great price. It's open door to me. I think in Chinese circles this would be "probably Song, maybe Yuan" and usually left at that, but it'll be interesting to see how you narrow it down.
Birgit,
That is the very best black glaze I have ever seen, and what a good price for such a beauty!
As far as I know the most mirror like black glazes are those of Ding-ware, Yaozhou and Cizhou, the paste seems not white enough though to be any of those (perhaps it is dirty?), in that order, the blackness of yours though far surpasses what examples I've seen of those as they tend to have a brownish tinge. Henan Kiln is definitely a possibility as well as some of the Fujian area kilns, though again I usually see a brown tinge or edge to them, and I would definitely leave a large window for late Song-Yuan dynasties. I am very interested to see what Peter says.
Such a wonderful thing, great find.
Cheers,
Jeremy
P.S. if you stare into it can you see the future?
I have been wondering for a few days if this could be a Japanese imitation of a Song style bowl. The only reason I mention this is I have seen Japanese glaze like this in the past.
Birgit,
Your lovely bowl has been somewhat of a puzzle to me. Like all the others, I think it has some age but it doesn’t fit very easily into known Song, Jin, or Yuan(?) categories of black ware. The shape is not typical of the types of bowls produced in those eras. All my early black glazed examples have some brown in them. My first thought was that it looks like Kangxi mirror black, but that later glaze wouldn’t have dripped like that at the base. I see nothing particularly wrong with the foot rim construction. Do you suspect it was buried at one time?
It is certainly an outlier compared to the black wares of the period.
My first thought was definitely Henan, but Jeremy brought up some good points about Yaozhou as a possibility. Those kiln sites are in neighboring provinces, but if I'm not mistaken the Yaozhou kilns stopped production by the end of the Song.
As for the brown/black question, the brown color should be visible under a loupe, though maybe only visible where the glaze thins.
I'm also wondering if that's a white slip on the foot.
Looking forward to Peter's opinion 😀
Hi William and Craig,
the bowl isn't scratched so either the glaze is very hard or it was never buried. Before appliying the black glaze the whole body was covered with a thin brownish glaze which is still visible in the gaps between the black glaze, in the holes of the glaze and around the rim where the black glaze is thinner. There is no white slip on the foot, the same semi-transpaent brownish as on the body is also applied in the middle of the foot rim.
The impression I get from the bowl is that it's not terribly old, Kangxi was one of my guesses. Another guess was South East Asia but I couldn't find that shiny black in my books. I'm looking forward to Peter's opinion. I also thought about asking on Gotheborg as I am a member at the moment.

@shinigami You might have already seen this, but this lecture has some very nice things to say about Japanese ceramics.
It is also by J. J. Lally whom is having a few auctions coming up at Christie's and Bonham's.
@rahawkins Thanks a lot, I had not seen the video before and have enjoyed watching it today. Stunning pieces!
Birgit
@rahawkins Thank you, this video will help me appreciate Peter's latest video on the J.J. Lally sale and the latest catalogue on the collection in the Reference Bookcase. Much appreciated, Sharon
@shinigami Thank you for sharing the evaluation, it is a lovely piece with a beautiful glaze.
