This is the black bowl I recently bought at the Nagel auction for EUR 333 including fees. As I don't know much about monochromes and my only Yuan piece is a tiny jarlet, I decided to believe the description of the auction house. What do you think, is it a Yuan bowl? The diameter is 19,5 cm / 7 6/8 inch. There's a glaze fault inside and another one on the outer wall.
Birgit
It's a beautiful bowl Birgit.
I am not an expert on these. The pooling and footrim look consistent with known examples.
I noticed that there appears to be a old label. Perhaps a ex-museum piece or other. Perhaps make some enquiries etc?
i think it's highly probable to be period.
Really nice buy IMO.
Mark
The bowl is throwing me off only due to the photography I would love to see it in natural lighting the foot looks like a pretty standard Jin/Yuan foot. Nagel is no spring chicken in the antique market so your probably good with their dating.
@lotusblack Brian, here's a smartphone picture in natural light.
Birgit
@shinigami
Hello Birgit
Your bowl is wonderful. Is it possibly black Yaozhou ware, Northern Song or maybe even as early as Tang? Perhaps one of the major museums may be able to date it from the style of the footring.
Kind regards,
Jeremy
Hello Birgit
Below is page 122 from Mr Mowry's book which shows the base of a Yaozhou black and russet glazed bowl for your reference.
Kind regards,
Jeremy
You may struggle to find examples of Yaozhou black glazed bowls due to their rarity, but below is a link to a Yaozhou persimmon glazed bowl sold by Christie's which shows an image of the base.

Hi Jeremy, thank you for that further information. I have looked at some Yaozhou bowls but they look slightly different in form and glaze. The auction house called it a Henan black bowl. Alain Truong shows some, most seem to have a brown pattern while mine is just black. I might ask Peter Combs about it.
Birgit
Below is a link to a Alain Truong post of a Yaozhou bowl, which may have a taller footring, but the shape of the bowl is similar to yours.

@shinigami Birgit I’m still thrown off by the glassy reflection of the glaze is it really that reflective? I’m not sure I have seen an early period Chinese stoneware bowl with a glaze that reflective is it showing any ware?
@lotusblack There are areas inside where the glaze seems slightly rubbed. The outside surface is shiny, but not like a mirror, the reflection is a bit irregular. Also there are some bubbles in the glaze, especially on the inner bottom.
Birgit
Hi Birgit -
As with Mark, I know very little about these Northern black wares …
Just for you to compare:-
Attached images of a bowl and jar, both attributed to Yuan dynasty, Gugong, Palace Museum Beijing …
