I find myself increasingly attracted to jade carvings and would love to learn as much as possible.

Where do I start?

What books are best?

Does peter have any good videos on Jades?

Thanks so much!

Hi Johnny,

I would recommend 'JADE' by Roger Keverne. It's affordable at about $50. With good write ups and excellent pictures. Roger was a leading dealer in the UK.

Screenshot 20220217 190845

Second I would highly recommend the reference book by Professor Jessica Rawson. This one is used by leading auction houses and museums. It's out of print and can be pricey. But I have seen them from time to time for about $100. I use this one on a regular basis.

Screenshot 20220217 191030 com.android.chrome

Any books by Sam Bernstein are excellent. I think he has written about 10 books or so on the subject. Very informative and a leading expert. He used to run a gallery in San Francisco. Now only online. Very nice guy!

Screenshot 20220217 190258

This one is also good. And not expensive!

Screenshot 20220217 190313

Moving up the chain we have Simon Kwans book on archaic jades. Out of print atm. And expensive if you can find a copy. Anywhere from $350 up.

Screenshot 20220217 190327

This one is used a lot by scholars and it's also out of print. Hard to buy under $450. Highly recommended.

Screenshot 20220217 190340

These are just some of the reference materials currently available on the market. There are 100's of different book by different scholars and or collectors/dealers.

As the Roger Keverne book is still available and affordable I would start with that.

Understanding the different materials jadeite and nephrite and how to tell the difference is paramount. As are and understanding the stones often sold as jade. These include serpentine and bowenite. This will be a hands on also experience.

It's important to be able to handle as much jade as you can. Obviously you can't handle jades in a museum. But you can at auction houses like Christies and Sotheby's. I would recommend you do this.

Learning the carving styles and how to distinguish between old and new carvings will save you a lot of money. Books by Sam Bernstein will be of assistance here.

I don't think Peter has ever dedicated a segment dedicated to jades. But I am not 100% sure.

I hope this is of assistance to you. Here on the forum we have a few knowledgeable collectors/dealers who will help you in your quest.

Mark

PS: just a few of my favorite pieces atm

The first one is a white jade plaque/buckle from the Yuan-Ming period.

The second is a large jades scholars rock from the late Ming, early Qing period.

Third is a silver letter opener by famed artist/retailer Edward l. FARMER. With a openwork carving from the Ming period.

Fourth is one of my favorite pieces. A jade toggle from the late Qing period.

Lastly is a massive celedon jade censer from the 19/20th century.

@imperialfinegems Well my friend, you have taught me well enough to know that the carving of a rearing horse, which I purchased yesterday is serpentine, it has the white blotches. I made a brief stop at a favored shop returning from a medical appointment, makes a fast stop, "do you have anything Asian?" I really bought it because it has a fitted stand and I have longed for one. I will post it eventually so you can confirm whether serpentine or other substitute. Also, picked up a signed black art glass Murano bowl (goes well with my fireplace), masked happy camper, out of there in fifteen minutes), speed shopping.

I concur with the recommendation on the book by Roger Keverne; and Sam Bernstein is a friend and my mentor. HIs books and wealth of knowledge were remarkable. Sam's descriptions of items are incomparable. Visit his website. Amanda sells his books from the site. She is quite knowledgeable as well.

Depending on what types of jade pieces you are interested in "Chinese Jade Animals" Published in 1996 by the Urban Council of Hong Kong is a terrific book.

Older books  that will provide you great reference points include "Chinese Jade throughout the Ages" by Stanley Nott. It was first published in 1936, but reprinted in 1962. Most plates are in black and white and the photos are not as good as in the books above, but it has a tremendous amount of information. I'd include "Chinese Jade of Five Centuries" by Joan M. Hartman. First printed in 1969 and reprinted in 1962. Ms. Hartman concentrated on pieces in American Museums.

Hope this helps.

Steve C.

Hi Steve,

Firstly Steve, welcome to this great forum.

Thank you for your additional book references. Luckily I was just able to purchase the book on 'chinese jade animals' via a seller here in Australia.

Screenshot 20220221 071326

I look forward to reviewing it in coming days.

Must be a honor and a privilege to know Mr Bernstein personally. I don't know him as such. Only via emails etc and forums.

For interested members his website is www.bernsteinjadeart.com

I will check out your other recommendations and thank you for joining us. I look forward to perhaps seeing some of your jades.

Mark

BTW: do you have any recommendations for books that deal specifically with tooling both old and modern and how to tell the difference. I often get asked but don't know of such. Probably Sam Bernstein has but I don't know which of his books etc.

I listed a book called ‘Chinese carved Jades’ yesterday,

I’m in the U.K but you may be able to find it locally if you are elsewhere.

@imperialfinegems

Thank you Mark. Glad you found the book. Its a terrific visual reference. We're currently taking photography classes to show off our pieces. Once the camera store gets the new light tent I'll  post some photos.

Funny story about how I met Sam years ago. I purchased two bankers boxes of jade items from a customer at our shop . My wife (Laurie) knew something about jade and I knew nothing. When I brought it home she was not pleased and told me it was not authentic and just stones. In my defense, the customer had told me how he collected the items and what they were. Laurie suggested I take the items to Sam at his shop in San Francisco. I took the items into the shop and was going to place them on the counter. Sam told me to just open one of the boxes.  He took a look and then encouraged me to take a close look at the items on display in the shop. When I was done I let him know. He asked me for my opinion on the differences; and I told him there was a remarkable difference in detail and subject matter. Sam affirmed what Laurie had told me.  He asked what I paid and I told him. To reassure me he told me I'd probably be able to make the money back.

That was in 2008. it was the start of a wonderful friendship and a journey where Sam helped educate me and train my eye.

Steve
