Hi eveyone,
I saw this bowl being sold on Catawiki. It is a modern bowl that sold for €6500… Can anyone tell me the reason for this price?.. i am trying to learn..
Thanks to all! Haiko
I also watched this bowl there were also a couple of imperial pieces in the sale I felt were not authentic. But as for this bowl it could have been authentic and listed as modern. Maybe others can chime in.
The horse looks so stiff - I’m almost sure it’s a modern bowl. Did they list it as modern?
Birgit
Do you have a link? I want to see the mark, there is a possibility by one of famous artists, but I need to see the signature to be sure. Thanks.
Yin
Picture #9 shows typical orange peel texture on the glaze, which is a positive sign at least. It’s very hard to authenticate a piece like that without holding it in hand and feeling the paste at the foot rim. Therefore, it’s understandable that some people chased it because they might think that it is probably an authentic piece from imperial kiln and they are willing to take the risk
I think>>not silly and stupid people bidding and buying bowls at 6.5k euros + fees on Catawiki - just because they like it 🙂
"Modern" in a description at Catawiki - very popular, when so-called "experts" they don't have a clue "what is it" when it comes to serious and expensive items. Unless "you" have documentation to confirm the authenticity of offered item.
Mainly, if there is nothing there for them to see - their expertise "skills" ends right there at that very second 🙂 Unless something offered is 100% obvious what is it.
So far I met 1 decent expert at Catawiki. It's Giovanni Bottero, Japanese art. Real respect as much as I can give to a person. Always very helpful and with real intentions to make a successful sale on behalf of Catawiki.
Chinese department staff - is very interesting in my eyes 🙂 Super interesting...
With really good staff, Catawiki could do much better in every way as for today.
@yinchris so they bid it up because of this then. Thinking or knowing it is imperial Daoquang.
Looks like, same bowl is up for sale once again @Catawiki. Possibly seller tried to boost up a final sale price previously, or "genuine" non payer 🙂
I can't understand why Catawiki never integrates reasonable "zoom" function on theirs website. So annoying...

Hi, Catawiki has no pictures limit for one lot, I think system automatically reduces size/resolution of pictures, so we loose zoom function. Also they don't remove past lots (in contrary to ebay). Most probably they save space on servers. Chinese porcelain is specific, good quality and resolution pictures are very important, for most of other collectibles they sell, it's does not matter (i.e. vintage cars, clocks, furniture) so probably they don't know about the problem.
Re Catawiki experts - consider number of auctions the have. They make Chinese ceramics, no reserve, weekly, premium, decorative, exclusive, private collection... etc. So they need to manage hundreds or thousands of items weekly. Some of them with wrong descriptions, poor pictures. Some - intentionally listed good fakes as originals. Much more auctins comparing to Japanese art mentioned in this thread. I think even with best will, they simple can't make it very good, due to lack of time.
All above are my thoughts, I've never met any Catawiki expert personally.
Best regards,
Lysander
@kudousa "experts" at catawiki, should see or know more that potential buyers.
I disagree. They have to manage everything from China. From textiles to ceramics. From archeology to modern art. Imposible. Collector specialized in one field will be better. I'm collecting edged weapons from my country. About 15 years of experience, thousands of items had in hands, thousands seen in museums, books or in pictures. Even now, I always consult purchases with few other collectors. Fakes of swords are simple too good now to make decisions myself. But I'm avoiding most of museum curator's (few expections here) and well known experts. Collectors simple know better. Consider also that Chinese art on Catawiki is "scanned" by dealers from China, who are really good and usually work in narrow field only. Experts working with everything have no chances in this competition.
BR, Lysander
Sold again for 3400 EUR. It's still not price of the modern fake. Seller could raise price, but he would need two persons to manage it (as I can see from 1800 two bidders only). Or there was real buyer bidding against him, what suggests bowl was good. Also for bidding over 1000 EUR, Catawiki needs credit card as guarantee. It's not as simple as on ebay to raise the price.
Do you remember Christies auction few months ago? I think in NY. Items listed with estimation on level $1000-2000, sold for 50K and more? Same story, Christies experts were not sure about originality (or didn't want to take responsibility), but collectors recognised the value.

The art of calligraphy - and for the ancient Chinese it certainly was an art - aimed to demonstrate superior control and skill using brush and ink. Calligraphy established itself as one of the major Chinese art forms during the Han dynasty (206 BCE - 220 CE), and for two millennia after, all educated men were expected to be proficient at it.
