Dear Short,
This a very interesting thread hope it keeps going, it is hard to keep a tab on prices in the market working in isolation. It will be no surprise to me if we detect a rise in the value of cloisonne it has been undervalued for a long time. Bit surprised to see the prices of the lower quality ceramic items appearing to be on an upward trend.
Dear Brigit,
You are right about Guest and Gray I have found them to be very good. They have been scrupulous fair with me especially on postage costs which in my case is important living in Australia and their packaging is bullet proof.
Dear Nic,
Great attitude good to read your posts glad that you have not lost your enthusiasm despite your recent unfortunate experiences.
Cheers
Michael

Dear all,
personally I think that threads should not be this way, mixing a lot of things, at the point that one is not understanding to what the comments are referred. A lot of confusion here. Some member ask a question, then before answers arrives, other things are popping up, with the consequence that it is not clear to what the answer is addressed.
Dear Nic, I do not where do you read and to what was referred the following:
“….. an item featured on this forum that had turning rings/tracks/lines on the footrim and the advice was something like “if you see these on a Kangxi piece, run a mile”.”
If you are referring to the very fine circular marks barely seen on the base of the jar on sale at Guest and Gray, that is not a bad sign. On the opposite, it is a good sign for genuine Kangxi vases. Not always there, but an excellent sign when there is. Note that it must be of that particular type, very fine.
Dear SortDong, those “Wang Bing Rong type” super-modern, slip cast jars have the same relation to Wang Bing Rong works than a naïve portrait has to the Monna Lisa.
Giovanni
Hi Giovanni!
Thanks! So just to clarify, are these turning rings or very finely executed cut marks on the G&G jarlet?
If they are turning rings, this is OK for Kangxi?
Thanks
Nic
Giovanni
I think Nic was referring to the clear turning marks on the actual foot not the base , these can be seen clearly at 9 o'clock position .
I too worry when i see such even turnings on an alleged old piece although the turning marks on the Kangxi jar by Guest and Grey look uneven enough to be done on a foot operated wheel and not a modern mechanically turned wheel.
Carl
The 'Guest&Grey' Kangxi Jar in discussion for reference.
Antique Small Chinese blue and white ginger jar, Kangxi (1662-1722)
Interesting discussion on Kangxi footrim. However it does not specifically mention turns on the actual footrim itself but the discussion does mention the running or turns on the inside of the vase and those turns having ridges, it does not mention them on the outside base but i think Giovanni has dealt with that on this thread already.
So food for thought and some interesting comparisons of a kangxi base and a republican base.
Excerpt from discussion ( pic 3 is the republican base) ( pic 1 and 2 are kangxi) :
Hi Toan
I hope these photos will help. 1) base of a Kangxi blue and white Yen Yen vase. Notice the similar orange burn color where the glaze meets the biscuit and the concave inner foot rim. 2) the inside of it notice the similar burst bubbles. 3) a republic period blue and white foot rim. Notice how it tries to imitate the kangxi period base including the double blue rings. It is trimmed both inside and outside the foot rim. This forms a ledge both sides. There are plenty of Kangxi export pieces in Amsterdam and England, as they were exported there in the 17th amd 18th century. I use to buy a lot from there. New Zealand has very little good Chinese antiques, due to it's short history. Most of the stuff I have seen in antique shops there are recent fakes from China or republic pieces. The only good Chinese antiques I have seen there was at Canterbury museum, Christchurch.

Hi SD,
Thanks very much. I did notice that in the video!
I’m assuming that either a) there are exceptions, that some Kangxi pieces do turn up with turning rings as Giovanni mentioned or b) the rings on the G&D jarlet are not turning rings but something else.
I’m not sure I’m any wiser!?
Nic
Dear Nic and Carl,
I was referring to the very fine circles on the base. As for the foot, it can vary a lot.
I am posting here two pictures of genuine Kangxi bases. In both them you can see the fine circles on the base, and you can also see that the foot is different from each other, although both are Kangxi.
Giovanni
Thank you Giovanni,
I can see rings on the footrim of the second vase. So it is possible for there to be turning rings on a Kangxi piece.
Thanks s lot
Nic

It is a decent size and displays beautifully. Sometimes when several people want something, the price can get high.

- There is an old 2" and 3½" crack to the body of the vase (the smaller crack can be seen on one of the floral panels and the other is hard so see against the blue texture glazed ground). Otherwise, it is in very good condition with no other chips, cracks or restoration.
