Hey all, one of my side hobbies is being an eBay seller dealing in vintage electronics / rare antiques.
I would like to try my hand dealing in some Chinese porcelain, part of my process it to create videos of items that I acquire to feature them too. I've been watching Peters videos for several months now and feel confident enough to try my hand sourcing some (Chinese / Japanese) antiques.
Just thought I would ask for any advice as far as selling on eBay?
I realise there's many fakes flooding the market, however I'm more worried about buyer scams / fraud. I know that with electronics it's very easy for buyers to have eBay side with the buyer and so I wonder if any fellow sellers have any tips or things to avoid?
Another point I wonder about is which locations might be problems to ship too? At the moment I block the Middle East, Africa and China due to unreliable postal services / scams. Will excluding Chinese buyers have significant impact?

Hi Owen,
Have you also handled a lot of Asian pieces? Sorry if that sounds condescending but it is a basic necessity and you didn't mention it in your post. If you haven't, that is where I would start: go to auctions look and feel. If you have and you feel confident, then go ahead but it can be very hard to achieve good prices on eBay without the reputation of being experienced and reliable - especially at the moment.
The pitfalls are the same as selling anything. I had to take back a painting because of an issue that I had flagged up clearly in the description and photos and the buyer was in the UK - it was very annoying! I have also had one non-payer from China but on the other hand, I have sold metal wares to Oman and other things to China, with no bother. Just make sure you describe/photograph everything that could be considered a fault.
Sorry if that is all a bit basic and obvious; I am sure others may have more to add.

Just make sure to include a signature delivery confirmation if it sells for over $750. You are more likely to encounter chinese buyers trying to take advantage of the partial refund ebay's policy rather than pretending they haven't received it. They might use macro lenses to show defects almost invisible to the naked eye before requesting a 30% refund. For items over 4k, I recommend shipping with fedex. And yes, blocking chinese buyers will have a big impact on the price and if you sell a lot, you'll be hit by the usual chinese buyers with 0 feedback who don't pay and ignore your messages.
That being said, the problematic buyers are generally only for items under $2000, above that the buyers are more serious and won't cause too many problems. Even under $2000, in my own experience only about 10% will be problematic by finding any excuses to ask for a partial refund.
One last advice, do not list your chinese antiques one at the time after you purchase them. Wait before having at least 5 or 6 before selling them. Visibility is very important in order to achieve good prices.

Thanks everyone, great advice. I will take into consideration these points. My plan is to have anything I buy appraised and slowly build a collection before I sell anything.

I stopped selling and will not sell again until the situation due to Covid-19 will be back to normal.
Post services are not reliable at the moment.
There are already too many issues in selling Chinese antiques, it is too risky to add a further one.

Most of the Chinese pieces that I've sold in the last month have stayed in the U.K.
I'm not seeing any interest from China whatsoever. I use the Global shipping programme so that keeps both scammers and decent customers away for the most part.
