Well I have the piece and it is definitely Zitan.
It sinks in water and stains paper purple and also discolours water.
The piece came from an Altar table from the Summer Palace which was sold around 20 years ago with other pieces at Christies.
The auction house are contacting their client for more specific details but due to client confidentiality will not reveal his details to me without his permission.
What are you hoping to achieve through your contact with Sothebys?
I confess, not knowing your motives, one might construe that you are hoping to profit from offering the missing piece to the current owner of the altar table. Another possibity is that they simply think you have a unidentified furniture remnant, and you are trying to build provinance by creating an unsubstantiated link with a famous furniture piece.
In either case, Im not sure they'll lend any help. Enjoy the piece for what it is... a nice piece of 18th c carved zitan trim.
I don’t think there is anything nefarious about wanting to make money on the sale of antiques (that’s what I do), but...
Why not reach out to a museum if this is an academic pursuit?
The Smithsonian has a staffed library and if you requested, let’s say, information and/or photos of tables from the Imoerial place, they may very well have resources to offer, free of charge.
Auction houses are not likely to provide resources for authentication / confirmation of provenance for a number of reasons, but mostly because there needs to be a financial interest to do so.
A single piece like this would not meet the financial threshold for any of the large auction houses to take interest.
But, it’s still unclear to me if you contacted the auctions requesting research assistance, valuation, or something completely different.
It’s a nice piece...no reason to doubt the authenticity.
However, if you’re looking to maximize your profit, let me say (and I do not recommend this if you like the piece), the value is in the quality of the wood, which can be used to repair other (more complete) zitan antiques.
I was attempting to find the Table,the next problem would then be to try to contact the buyer,which I know would be an impossible task for an individual to do.
I e-mailed the Chinese Embassy in London and its theirs if they want it.
Its just a section of frieze but it was stolen in 1860 or thereabouts.
