This 21cm Zitan wood frieze comes from an Altar Table taken from the Imperial Summer Palace, looted in 1860.
18th c,so who knows how many Emperors stood before it ?
Superbly carved,I intend to auction it later this month.
Obviously I won't be shipping it to a Mainland China address.
Hi,
Nice carving!
How do you know the provenance?

Obviously I won't be shipping it to a Mainland China address.
May I ask why not? Just out of interest.
Thanks,
Julia
Thanks for your responses: I quite understand the request for provenance.
From the reputable British auction house's description, viz
A Chinese zitan wood carving, 18th century, carved and pierced to both sides with magnolia branches and leaves, length 21cm. Note: this is a part section of a frieze of an altar table from the Imperial Summer Palace.
Further details will hopefully be forthcoming.
Obviously I won't be shipping it to a Mainland China address.

Thanks,
Julia
Hi Shine,
I know there are definitely Chinese laws about shipping Chinese antiques out of China...but sending them back is just fine as far as I know. I think this is what Julia is wondering. Also, you might get the best price from someone in China.
Best, Todd
take it with a grain of salt
I'm normally happy to sell to China but the Government regard items stolen from the Palace during its sacking as theirs by right so I wouldn't risk it in case it gets confiscated.
Many Chinese mainland buyers use a U.K. address for shipping.
I'll get the provenance details next week (I hope !).
Ah, I see! Thank you for the explanation.
Julia
hi shine and all, we had a simple 19th century, I think, cracked ice prunus vase confiscated in Beijing I believe. We lost the vase and the money and probably took a feedback hit as well. We do not ship back to China any longer. We will happily ship to any other country as far as I know. We have Chinese buyers from the west coast buy from us frequently. They are usually the pieces brigette has come across. I have yet to sell any of my good pieces, (in my mind). The day is coming though, I admit I have too many pieces and could stand to do a small cull of the lesser pieces. I actually lost one this morning, it was a late 19th brush holder, porcelain attached to a wood stand. The brush holder fell on the floor. I paid 10 dollars for it so that one was easy. We are doing a show tomorrow so hopefully that will be the only casualty. I decided not to repair it as it was repaired already, so into the garbage it went. I'm sure there are other folks who have stories to share about a piece they sent to China and it was swallowed up by the system. good luck all.

I think the Chinese government would be very hard pressed to prove this came from the Yuan-ming-yuan..as proving it would be nearly impossible. Which also make selling it with that very pedigree tough, unless you have absolute proof.

Ouch, it's probably now on display in the living room of some low-level bureaucrat. Sorry to hear about that.
I'm also interested to know if these mainland seizures are a common occurence.
Me, too. Are you told it has been confiscated or does it just get "lost" in the post? I imagine if it is confiscated, insurance does not pay out.
Julia
hi julia and all, the item just disappears, no insurance claim, total loss, a bummer. Hope you are doing well, and have a good day.

Hi Peter,
I understand your concerns but the statement by the auction house is unequivocal .
"Note: this is a part section of a frieze of an altar table from the Imperial Summer Palace."
When I collect the piece (I'll wait until it is in my hands) I'll ask for their proof.
If they'd have stated 'Reputed to come from' then of course it is heresay but to make such a bold statement and not provide the evidence is not acceptable.
Regards
Vic
hi shine and all, I would guess that the proof is in the form of a picture from the palace and then maybe the original reciept and then a chain of custody paper trail. I'm guessing they have that or some form of what I said. good luck.
