Hello Everyone,

Something that I have been thinking about for a bit are the Xuantong marked pieces - most of them are Republic or later, however I am sure there are some actual ones out there.

I am curious on the forum's thoughts on these two pieces:

@jg1133,

Hi Justin,

In my opinion the dragon bowl is newish. The dragon along with the pearl and waves are stiffly painted. The mark is too perfect. It's got unnatural wear to it.

The blue one has potential to be republican.

The dragon is beautifully painted and I thought maybe imperial quality and authentic until I saw the scratches in the gold disc. As usual the fakers overdid it.
The blue one looks like a fake too. The bottom doesn’t look Republic and the seal looks somehow contrived and applied too carefully.
I had been looking for years for a real Xuantong piece. Robert MacPherson sells one but as he didn’t answer my requests I couldn’t buy it. So I started to look out for dated porcelain and found a 1910 tea cup to fill the gap in my collection. Not m&p but at least p.

I also think the dragon bowl is a fake. The scratches on it are bizarre, such odd shapes. Also the white areas make me think of a modern tea cup.

At first I wasn't sure about the blue one, but I was a but puzzled that the seal was still intact when covering that particular mark.  Very often all that remains of seals are smudges or bits of it and I would have thought some of that one would have been removed to better investigate the mark because of what it is.  I also think the glazing looks too poor and patchy for an m&p bowl.

Thanks everyone,

I appreciated your thoughts on these. I have always wondered regarding these Xuantong pieces and always knew the majority are after the period. Very interesting point because there are way more marked pieces than could have been made in the period.

Rob Michiels has one identified as mark and period - however again, probably not.

The RM example looks authentic to me. Painting is very similar to a Guangxu bowl I have.
