I purchased these four wooden objects from a local dealer, who has always been honest with me and quite knowledgeable. He says they are Japanese scholar's objects from the estate of a prominent local collector, and I am sure that is what he thinks they are. They are quite interesting, and I really like two of them. But they are wood, and have no mark or calligraphy to indicate that they are Japanese. Do these look like real scholar's objects? How would one tell?
The first is easy, a bamboo brush case, about 6.5" high. Not carved or decorated, but it has a nice patina, and fits together well.
The second is a burl wood brush pot. I found similar pieces online, but this one seems a little less elaborate. It is 7.5" tall, with a central hole that is 4.5" deep (and quite dusty).
The next is one of my two favorites. I think it is intended to be a brush holder, made of a burl of deep purplish-red wood. Any idea what the wood is?
This is the last. It is a very nice burl bowl. I suppose it could be a brush washer, but there is no evidence that it was ever used that way--no stains or water marks on the inside. But it is really pretty, and like the previous piece, has a good patina of age. What would it have been used for?
Any thoughts? If scholar's objects, how old? Japanese? Chinese? Impossible to tell?

P.S. He also had these beautifully carved wooden knots, from the same collector. He did not think they were Asian. Any thoughts?
Thanks, Todd! I am glad that they look Asian to you. I was having the problems with the 1st one as a brush case, because it was a bit short. The tea caddy explanation fits better!
