Hey all,
I picked these up in a lot grab this weekend for $60, one alone will cover the cost but I'm pretty sure a few fakes are involved out of the bunch. Whats your thoughts?
Turquoise export bowl - may be a fake but unsure
Footed Rose famille bowl, looks genuine
Rose famille tea plate, feels 20th century mid
Canton blue 6" plate, I think it's fake since the picture design isn't as detailed as it should be.
Wood carving figurine *I don't know the figure represented with this, any help would be awesome! Feels qing crafted, has appropriated weight and carving techniques. Wood appears to be aged with the pressure cracks in place.
Set of 3 miniature stools. I haven't figured these out yet but there is a faint triangle chinese mark under the bottom of each. I'll get more photos of this later, but has anyone seen these like this and heard/seen similar triangular marks?
I rather like the butterfly with the crackle on the bottom.
@sharonp same, it was actually a compensational gift. I wanted to go for another export bowl the seller had, but after agreeing to purchase it and then looking for it; it couldn't be found. It was pretty much near identical to the Turquoise bowl, but a little less aged. Since he couldn't find it, he added another he had and then this one with it. It was a lucky bonus imo
@pbarski93 It looks like a Straits (Nyonya ware) pastel color palette, but it is lacking the typical phoenix, dragon motif but the colors are nice and I saw similar butterfly on Etsy, called Nyonya/Straits in description. Nyonya is Mrs. In Malay based languages, including Bahasa Indonesia.
I think the wooden items are second half 20th c, but I don't know much about wood.
I am not sure what you mean by a triangular mark is it one character that looks like a triangle or several characters in a triangle? Maybe a photo would help someone identify it. If they are like small stools, I imagine they may be vase stands?
The porcelain is later 19th century export ware with low quality painting and some of it is also damaged. I wonder if you can resell it with gain.
Birgit
@pbarski93 The splits in the carving is from not being carved from kiln dried wood and then being exposed to forced air furnace, which dries out the wood. You may be able to get sixty for the butterfly if you get it cleaned up a bit, certainly better than some of the ones on Etsy for sometimes ridiculous prices. Your piece also appears to be older than the ones on Etsy, no mark, so before 1893 unless someone brought it back from their travels or had a paper label.
There're a lot of nice things out there that just aren't that valuable. It gets easier to leave some behind as you learn more.
@rahawkins Yes, it is the nice things that you decide against that haunt you. I could have brought back Straits by the barrel, except it did not appeal to me at that time and I will never forget the sweet old dealer, who so wanted me to see his special treasure and when he carefully unwrapped the pieces, they were spinach and egg yolk, which horrified me at the time, had to to wipe the expression off my face before he looked up and just say, "begus sekali, terima kasi, sampai bertamu lagi," that is probably misspelled, but means very nice, thank you, see you later.
@julia hey sorry had been out for a bit and I totally forgot to update this!
Pretty tough to determine exactly what it makes out, each mark is heavily faded or smudged out. This is prolly the best photo I could take.
It's really tough to directly identify the kangee here.
@sharonp yeah there wasn't a lot of loss from this grab bag, 60 for the set, 1 alone would pretty much cover it and let the rest add revenue to the shop. I'm prolly going to keep the miniature tables/stools and list the rest though, the tables are fitting my room setup so it's turned into a small love of appreciationwith em.
First time handling but I enjoyed the experience so no harm no doubts I guess. Thanks for identifying the direction with the export butterfly bowl!
Per the wood splits, thank you! I thought it was odd how it was formed. I'm gonna look into more research around this part next to spot this better.
@rahawkins agreed, I think I enjoy this a little too much but it could've been worse in hindsight. I'm gonna slow down for a little while either way. I have to keep in mind what's going to sit and whats going to move at least for the while being like any business. The good thing with the shop its already taught me what's worth selling, keeping and searching for. I originally started it to sell handmade wares, but east Asian art was and still is my biggest selling market. The plus side, trips to thrift stores are just gallery browsing at this point. Fun and informative, but it could/would be a lot worse if I at didn't consider the issue at hand. I appreciate your experience!
@sharonp I feel a duality there. The dealer who gave me these and some exciting pieces, I'm in a partial of the same experience it seems! The dealer I found is a local off Facebook but he's got a mixed bag of wares. Most meh, some which lens alone shows it's too much for the value, but the digging was worth it with his wares. Still we link up, meet on a couple of items, he preps them and confirms this is what I'll get with good preparation photos, and we meet up at a store in the area and trade off for a box full of newspaper wrapped wares. Not quite as exciting and pressured, but a good experience and chance to catchup for a bit. Even if something doesn't seem so well off. It does open up that hidden listing once in a while where he shows something too great to not consider, either for the shop or for the hearth.
Btw the post with the gray shipwreck-suspected pieces is about to be updated with some good news from that same shop!
