Hi All,

So, I have been traveling more for work, now that Covid is under control, and look at what I found recently!  I am not certain this is Kutani.   I can read the symbols Nippon and Yokohama, but that is about it; it doesn't seem to have a Kutani mark, so maybe it is from another region.   But it is certainly the most detailed decoration I have seen on a Japanese ceramic!  Look at the quality!

This 10" plate appears to show a Japanese warrior and his hawk, and his companions. I suspect this is Jimmu and his bird Yatagarasu.

The best part?  I found 12 of these, each with a different image!  All seem to be following the same group of people, though, so I think they are telling famous tales of a famous Japanese hero (perhaps Jimmu, as I said above...)

There is a little stacking wear--when I found them, they were just stacked together, one on top of the other.  After strangling the Antique dealer for his mistreatment of these plates, I purchased the whole lot from his wife.

Can anyone read the maker's name, and hazard a guess about the age?  I am thinking Meiji, but could they be early Taisho?

Thanks,

Charles

Wow, what a find! They are very beautiful. I would say Taisho rather than Meiji, so around 1920s.

I can't recognise more than you can in the mark, there looks to be a zo in the bottom line but that doesn't really help as we would probably expect to see that anyway. Maybe George will look in.

It's supberb find... And 12 different ones. Wow.

My feeling is late Meiji period to Taisho. So 1900-1920.

Master quality.

Well my around 1920 may be a few years out. I was researching a plate I was thinking of bidding on and came across this website with some lovely pieces. Ones like yours are dated Meiji. There is even a similar style mark.

I need to photograph the rest.  Will post them when I get the chance. This one is not the best--just the one with the clearest view of the leader.

That really was an amazing find. Hope someone recognises what the story is. Have you looked on kutani.org? There may be something useful on there.
