Spotted these today at one of my fave local shops. I handled them, but they are $$$$. The woman who owns the shop said that they were the property of a private collector, the woman told her kids she paid upwards of 20,000 for the Censer. The Kylins are much older and look to be the real deal. 24 Kt gilt. I have seen similar examples at Christie’s go for so much more. Trying to justify the asking price. However she did say that the children of the woman who passed away were sick about consigning them for so little, considering she had told them what they are worth.
What does everyone think? Worth a closer look? Don’t mind the little brass piece in the middle, it’s nothing special. But I really love the others.
The bottoms of the statues are open, these are very substantial pieces and the bronze balls in the mouths, as well as the creatures under the paws, move.
Thanks in advance, any opinions appreciated. Let’s just say if they are real, the asking price is a fraction of what could be realized at auction.
Thanks, Davina
April
Hi Davina,
Very nice story you have been told. But that's all it is. A fable.
The censer is new. These can be purchased for a fraction of what the vendor is telling you.
The 'kirin' is also not old. Perhaps a few years older than the censer. But not by much. There should be two of them.
Tourist outlets in China are literally stacked to the ceiling with these types of wares.
I would not buy or bother with these.
Mark
Thanks so much. I wouldn't have been able to buy them anyway. And yes there are two lion statues they are a pair.

Hello April
I may be wrong, but IMO this is a "Guardian Lion" also known as "Foo Dog", Shishi, Shisa or Koma Inu. Possibly female, as she has what appears to be a puppy below the paw.
I believe that Kylin or Kirin usually has a dragon face, deer horns and horse body.
Best,

I have a similar style, large lidded jar, definitely 20th c. I took the “Peoples Republic Of China” sticker off myself. Swap meet piece, $5.00. I just cant walk away for that price!
