Circa 1900,mass produced but nice and greatly under-rated.

I think this style has been produced over a fair part of the early to mid 20th c. I suspect they were tourist_type wares brought back by soldiers or early tourists and there are a lot of them around - sometimes optimistically described as late 19th c.
I think this example is more like those of the mid 20th c. I have a large-ish ginger jar of this type but I think mine is older, maybe 1930s. I was told it was brought back by a great-uncle who was a merchant seaman between the wars, but that is the only part of the story that I know for sure is true. I suggest mine is older as it has a turquoise base and interior which I think stopped being used at some point.
I have a few but they are mass produced and almost exclusively exported.
Sadly I don’t see them increasing in value but they are pleasing to the eye and genuine.

That's an nice pair, older I think - that is my feeling, anyway. It is a useful comparison, you can see that less work has gone into John's. In case anyone is interested, here is mine.
Thanks. As I said, but it was between the wars, so could be 20s or 30s. I need to check the old letters I have as they may say. I know there was an account of collecting beef from Argentina, but can't remember much more.
It is older than John's, again, as with Vic, there is more work in it eg cloisons are more numerous, less widely spaced. There is also more definition to the pearl, the claws etc. The same is true of yours Martin and you also have the turquoise base.
So, yes, I feel yours is also older and certainly nicer quality. In mass production, I think quality tends to be the first thing to suffer.
