This is the bowl I had mentioned in another thread. Rather large for a tea bowl at 6.7" (17cm) diameter. Maybe better suited for rice. Large spur marks on the interior. Almost a hare's fur effect in some areas. Kiln grit on the interior of a dark clay foot. Glazed at least three times I guess; bluish silver, shades of brown, a very light yellow. Since I haven't found a good match in coloring, I really can't say what this is. It seems to be Korean Totoya style. Todd

Hey Todd,
Beautiful and interesting bowl. It does look Korean, not sure if it is Totoya type or not, but something about the shape of the foot makes me think not.... I am including a few pics from a book I got during my research on mine, the glaze looks a bit like the Mishima type, but I really do not know.
Please forgive the crude translations, the book is in Japanese and I was just using it for pictorial references.

Looks like a great book, thanks for the pictures. I don't think my bowl has the same age as these, but there are similarities. The shades on the interior are very striking. A very rich brown. If not for the spur marks, I would have assumed Japanese. Mishima is a thought, the older ones sometimes have spurs. But they usually involve a pattern/design and the shade of brown doesn't seem right. Totoya can feature either a high and a low foot, apparently. But the foot on the one I have doesn't quite match, I agree. Maybe I will drop an email to the professional that was able to help you in your search.

I look forward to hearing what you learn on it. The glaze has so much character, and I love the hares fur effect, not something I have see on the Korean examples. But definitely on a dark stoneware body, and the spur marks are quite common on Korean pieces through the 19th century if I recall correctly, though your bowl looks early to me, how early I couldn't say.
Btw I found the book searching on ebay for Korai Chawan books, just popped up and seemed like a good reference to have.

I've located a companion for this tea bowl (which I've never successfully identified). A bit slimmer and taller. Nicely shaped. The same dark clay evident from the foot. The hare's fur effect in a rich-brown glaze. That almost metallic blue/purple peeking through in places. This one has what seem like spurs on the interior, except they are glazed over. Fired more than once? The prior example has five very prominent spurs with no reglaze. Also what looks like four finger marks on the exterior, and possibly a thumb mark on the opposing side, although less obvious. Silky smooth to the touch. I am enamored by these two. I like how individual they are, although surely the same type.

Nice Find. love the combo of the glazes. Have you looked into Hyogo Prefecture wares? Some reddish paste pieces with white slip under iron glazes and occasional ash glazes.
Just perhaps looking at some of the smaller Japanese kilns might spark some new discoveries...

Finally stumbled upon what seems to be a match, at least in style, for these bowls. Seto yellow tenmoku.
It looked like a very good match in color and shape, especially for my 1st, darker bowl. Then what really cinched it was when I zoomed in on the pictures of the foot, and there is the iridescent colors peaking through, just as on my bowls. Not sure about the age being a match of course...
