Hi,
Do you think this is ok for late 19th/early 20th c? I haven't been to look at it, yet and the picture of the foot isn't great. Might there be a date clue in the script?
It is about 11 ins high. Thanks for your help.
Julia
Hi Julia
from the painting style it was made around 1900-1910. These items are often called hat stands though they weren’t used as such in the 20th century any more. 11 inch is a standard size for them. The usual price is $200-300.
Birgit
Thanks, Birgit. I forgot that some hat stands have no holes and it seemed too big for a brush pot. The opening bid is set low at £30. I hope to look at it tomorrow.
Thank you for your help. ?
Appealing example. Worth a punt IMO!
Mark
I think this is a recent forgery based on the first photo. If you can get a closer photo I can tell more confidently. The palette just doesnt seem right to me. Might not be worth the opening bid price.
The picture is a bit dark, but the style and the details look ok to me, from the red cord in the hair to the wrong perspective of the blue box on the table. If you can handle it in person, Julia, look for the topmost band on the rim. This should be worn off gilding, not some kind of color. Here's a boy from Tommy Eklöf's book in comparison to one from the item in question. Sorry the cut out of the picture is quite small.
Birgit
That's ok, thank you for posting it. I am hoping to look at it, tomorrow and will look out for what you say and report back.
The only thing that has concerned me is the blush to the outer cheeks of the children. That struck me as unusual. It reminds me a bit of Republic faces that have that strong colouration, compared to being just left white.
I will try to get a better photo, too.
Thanks again, everyone.
The blush seems like a typical Republic feature but can also been found earlier.
Birgit
Well, I have had a look. It was noticeably light to lift up. The line around the top is not evenly coloured and is a rather nasty dirty colour, I could see no remnant of any gilding. I tried to take a photo (edit: not a good one!).
The stamp is messy, the footrim has lots of those tramlines running round it and seems rather dirty.
Hmmmm, I am not sure. I thought it might be heavier.
Hi Julia,
I have just looked at my two 1920 hat stands and attached a few pictures. None of them is lighter or heavier than one would expect. I have a smudged stamp too. What worries me a bit is the line that should be gold, not brown, even if little remains. But maybe it was brown color from the beginning. Though the item still looks ok to me, if it doesn't convince you 100% better pass it. Republic hat stands can be found quite often.
Birgit
Thanks, Birgit, that is very helpful. I felt the smudgy print was a good sign, but I am just not sure about that odd-coloured line or the lightness. I will do some more research and then see what happens.
Thank you for helping. ?
Hi Julia,
I found this on RM auctions. I think it may be relevant because the characters have a similar exaggerated blush to the cheeks, the script has the same ‘washed’ black appearance and this one doesn’t have the band around the neck at all.
I don’t know much about how the gilding is made/applied to Chinese porcelain, but I know that many UK potteries never mastered gilding or lustre. Others used cheaper, substitute browns and oranges to imitate gilding in order to keep costs down. It seems conceivable that similar reasons could’ve been at work in China at the time?

Great, thank you! That is the same blush on the sides of the cheeks. If the price stays low, as Mark said, it may well be worth a punt. Will let you know. ?
