Hi,
Here is something else that has caught my eye, the horses' faces are great - although their tails are a little odd. Does anyone have any idea as to age? Again,I have not been to look so have no idea how it feels or whether the colours are true. It looked rather Kangxi to me, the horses, the fritted rim, but with so much blue I wondered if it might be 19th c but the foot doesn't look right. Basically, I need help! Thanks for any you can give.
Julia
Just under 12 inches across.
Hi Julia -
This dates to late Shunzhi/early-mid Kangxi periods
Attached image/description of a very similar dish in the V&A Museum, London.
Apologies for the poor image quality - taken under artificial light with my iPhone!!??
Stuart
Thank you, Stuart, that is very interesting - especially as my first feeling was that it might be Persian-inspired, something about the flowers reminds me of some, loosely-speaking, Armenian-style pieces I have.
This one must be a copy. The horses are spaced differently on the V&A example and one is not patterned. Also those wave-finger-things around the edges are bigger and bolder as though confidently executed by the original artist.
I will have a look, tomorrow, and try to take more photos.
Thank you for your help.
edit: just been looking at the V&A example: the horses are also plumper and the leaf slimmer!
Hi Julia -
Have reshot the dish in natural light - image attached.
Also images of an two enamelled pieces - a bowl with mythical creatures but showing similar flowers/waves within the composition, from the Butler Family Coll - and a ewer with similar horse/flowers/waves ex Lehmen Coll, now in the Metropolitan Museum - black/white image only, apologies.
Stuart
I have now handled this. It is very heavy and thickly potted, the base is rough and also seems like it is coated with something different to the glaze. The footrim is rough where it is fritted but also smooth, which felt quite weird.
It has a small upstand around the rim, like a small collar. The outside decoration is very messy reminds me of a Japanese stencilled bowl I have! I took a couple of photos but they aren't great, there wasn't a lot of room. I am not sure if it is a (respectful) copy or an attempt to deceive!
The upper rim looks strange to me. You wouldn’t expect kiln grit on the rim, rather you would expect some fritting there if Kangxi. Also the bottom looks a bit dirty. But I’m no expert, it’s just my impression.
Birgit
Here is an example on Ebay listed as Ming , similar with the same top rim.
Carl
Birgit, the rim is strange. It also seems a different shade, more like the base.
Carl, that is a very interesting comparison, thank you! Could these be Japanese copies. I am struck by how Japanese the side/rear views look.
I don't think I will be bidding on this one. Thanks for your help.
Hi Julia -
Pleased you managed to see/handle.
The upper rim is most unusual for this type of ware, as is the exterior decoration -Pine branches? - which I have not seen before on such pieces - very un-Chinese?! Possibly a later Japanese copy of a mid 17th c Chinese design ....!!? ?
Stuart
The pattern came from late Ming. Kangxi also used this pattern.
Just like everyone here mentioned, the fritting ist unusual for this dish. For me it looks like a late Qing piece. It's strange.

Thanks for the additional comments. My feeling is it could be a late 19th c/early 20th copy possibly from Japan. If that were the case, I would be happy to own it. If it doesn't sell, I will think about it.
Nice to have you back, Xin. ?

Yes, I think it's possible.
