Hello All,
I have had these two items for over 30 years. The tea pot is 7cm tall including it's cover. The bowl is 7.5cm x 5.75 cm at the top. Both decorated with the same motive in under glazed blue. So assume they were made to go together. There is no damage apart from age related wear marks. Not painted to the best quality showing coastal mountains, pine trees, junks at sea and flying birds.
Unsure as to their age or origin suppose they could be Japanese or Chinese. My thought is they most likely date to the early 20th century. Not sure if the bowl was meant to be this shape or if it distorted in the kiln. It is actually easy to drink out of in this shape. Also unsure it the crackle was intended or has just happened with time.
Julia,
The the tea pot has a hole in it's cover and four holes inside to act as a strainer. Not sure that you need a strainer when the pot would struggle with more than a few leaves.
Hope the forum can give me some pointers as age and place or origin. I guess to serious collectors these sort of things are just worthless poor quality items and they wonder why anybody would bother, but I find them charming and amusing and can't help feeling it is a minor wonder they have survived intact.
Look forward to your replies and hope everybody had a pleasant Easter
Cheers and Regards
Michael
Hi Brett,
It’s unusual to have a straight handle at a right angle to the side? In Western ceramics, this design is usually associated with chocolate pots rather than tea pots, but of course, there may be a completely different explanation when it comes to Asian ceramics.
Can’t help with dating I’m afraid!
Nic
Morning Brett, thank you for the info, you know me well. ? ?
I think it is Japanese as I have come across some side-handled teapots made by a female potter and poet (buddhist nun, I believe) called Otagaki Rengetsu. I am not saying that she made this, but the age of the pot would possibly fit with her life-span, although many of those handles seem open ended.
It is perhaps a starting point, anyway.
Dear Nic,
Yes I am familiar with those Chocolate pots I think Peter fairly recently mentioned in a video how to tell the difference between Chocolate pots and Coffee Pots and Tea pots in Asian ceramics.
Dear Brigit ,
Thank you for the term ' yokode no kyusu' will be a big help to me.
Dear Julia,
The handle is hollow and has an open end should of shown that in my photo's. Yes Otagaki Rengetsu what a fascinating person, born to a noble family in the late 18thc, widowed and all her 5 children dead by the time she was 30. Became a nun and one of Japans most famous poets, painters, calligrapher's and potter and a martial arts expert to boot. Alas I think her time line predates my little pot by some time. Although Rengetsu ware continued to be made after her passing. The wears I have seen attributed as Rengetsu ware are far more rustic than my pot covered in a thick creamy glaze with incised Calligraphy. When I say rustic I mean in the best Japanese Wabi Sabi terms would love to find a pot or two.
I now know my pot and bowl hails from Japan and the correct name for the shape and style of the tea pot.
Thanks to you all.
Michael
