Dear masters and experts,
I visited an antique shop and managed to take a (bad) snapshot at one of their cupboards. From what you see is there anything that might be worth further inspection? Thanks a bunch. luke
There looks to be a collection of quite a few nice looking items at first glance , but obviously closer inspection would be needed , looks to be loads of interesting pieces , Yuan white ewer , celadon pieces , the monochrome double gourd vase looks to have a pleasing shape. Lots to see there.
A feast for the eyes and if all genuine a very expensive shopping trip.
Carl
Dear Luke,
Ah the cabinet of curiosities would love to poke around in there.
Michael
Hi Luke,
I can’t see anything typically 19th century, which struck me as odd because they are usually the most abundant. But they could be in another cabinet somewhere in the shop, or even out on display due to their being relatively inexpensive.
Presumably, if these are genuine, they’d be quite expensive? In that case, Id have expected them to be displayed much better?
I’m splitting hairs now! It’s entirely possible this dealer has no clue about display. But I was in an Antiques store last week, and out on the table were Wanli cargo pots at a ridiculously high price whilst in the locked cabinet was a load of items priced at less than £30 each! Didn’t make much sense to me.
As a novice, I have to depend on these really crude tactics to prevent me making very expensive mistakes!
Nic
There are some interesting items there!
How much for the whole lot and where is this shop based? 🙂
But seriously I can see few items that require further inspection. The oldest one seems to be that large lidded jar on the bottom shelf, same with the pitcher - this one look very much Chinese to me and quite old. On the same shelf I would inspect the celadon bottle vase that we can see the neck only. Second shelf from the bottom contains some shipwreck items - they are quite old, there is famille rose tea pot - could be 19th C. on the 3rd shelf I would check 2 celadon bowls and also a celadon vase/jar and that b&w jinger jar at the back on the shelf.
Back to the bottom shelf - absolute must is the Buddha - very decent size, even if it is early 20th C then it's worth asking how much it is - they are quite desirable now.
Very interesting lot!
All the best,
Adrian

I would also suggest checking out the Buddha.
Hello,Luke
yes there are quite a few pieces need a closer look be careful the way there pack in there.
We’re I’m from you break it you own it and not all dealers in antiques know what they have.
Here are some things I pickup from dealer that didn’t know what they had
John
Hi Luke - a very interesting cabinet of objects and, as others have said based on this pic, some are certainly worth checking out in more detail!
When returning to view, look and handle closely those which attract and, if allowed, take several images of each object - especially the designs and/or glaze surfaces, mouths, footrim edges and bases.
Enjoy .....!!! ? ?
Stuart
Dear Carl, Michael, Nic, Adrian, Julia, John and Stuart,
Whoa.. these are kind of exciting responses from you all. I will investigate more of these objects.
Carl, is the white ewer Yuan or Song? From which period do you think is the double gourd vase?
Michael, yes indeed
Nic, couldn't the Buddha be 19th century? Sure, I can totally relate with your tactics - it's some type of defence mecanism, isnt it?
Adrian and Julia, why the Buddha? Is it that valuable?
John, very nice figurine objects there. Congratulations!
Stuart, thank you very much for your expert advice. Yes, I will take more photos when I revisit the place
As Adrian says, this kind of buddha can be quite desirable so it is worth looking at.
Julia, I happened to see another buddha like this type at another shop yesterday. Do people fake of this kind of buddha? Or better yet, could you please tell me what to look for in order to spot the one that is genuine? A sample would be fine also. Thanks alot. luke
Hi Luke,
I won't be very helpful as I know very little about these objects, but I have heard Peter talk about them a few times in his videos. There are most likely lots of these on the market, what you are looking for are signs of quality eg clearly defined features such as toes and fingers, a sharpness to the details and I think I remember him saying that a brick pattern on the garment was good.
I am not overly keen on these figures, so I haven't paid a lot of attention but I know that if I see something of this type, it is worth a look - just in case.
The best thing to do is to search the internet and try to compare the good with the bad, even better, try to handle a few decent items even if you don't intend buying them.
Julia
Thank you very much, Julia. You are very helpful. Kindest regards, luke
Hi Luke,
the only thing I can remember Peter saying about these Buddhas is that the ‘brick pattern’ Clothes are typically 19th century. Like Julia, I’m not a fan so haven’t paid much attention I’m afraid!
Yes, it’s definitely a defence mechanism. Also, when I put items for sale in a cabinet, I make sure the good things are displayed properly. I wouldn’t cram Moorcroft or Georgian silver into a dimly lit wooden cabinet. I suppose it’s possible that there are treasures here but that the dealer doesn’t know how good they are?
Nic
Yes, thank you, Nic.
And I agree with what you are saying here. But I have come across some dealers that know things only partially. These types of dealer are not totally updated with the lastest world market happenings. I once bought more that a dozen of valuable things for very little money - on items that have been kept and neglected in the hidden part of the shop for 3 generations. All said, antique hunting can be amusing sometimes, don't you agree?
