The handle definitely looks fragile and it is amazing it is intact. I suppose if 18th c Chinese ones can survive, than why not a European one?
As much as anything else, I feel if the jug is European, than the further we go into the 19th c, the more likely it is to have had some maker's mark.
May I ask where you got it, John? Only out of interest; it is very nice wherever it comes from.

@julia I got it at an estate sale last weekend. It was the estate of an antique collector who had passed away recently. I think I paid $10, maybe even less. I actually almost missed it - didn't see it until my third trip through and I was a little surprised to see it sitting there.

This type of jug is usually listed as Sparrow Beak Jug. They were made in Europe and the far east in this style mainly in the 18th century and early 19th century. Showing my age I guess but Antique magazines in the 1970's used to have long debates where the design originated, in the West or the East I seem to recall it was decided that it was the west when a silver one was found dated to the 1600's all academic now I suppose. I do recall scratching my head at the fact that early English porcelain Sparrow Speak jugs with transfer decoration used to bring more than their Chinese hand painted equivalent. Of course that was then and now is now. Sorry from the pic's can't be sure where your example originated. It is in good condition for it's age so many have physical damage chips to the beak spout, loss of handle's etc. Lots nice Chinese example were spoiled by having extra guilt splodged on after arriving in the west.
The link below has lots of photo's of this type of jug, from various sources, it is still amusing to me that many of the English ones are decorated in the Chinese taste and the Chinese one's decorated in English taste.

Thanks Michael for the link (my reply button is still contrary). You inspired me to look at old articles that I saved, one on celadon from Traditional Home, September 1996 issue by Richard Mannaker (I wish I had bought more celadon in the nineties, just like I wish I had bought more gold). Going to look at old Antiques magazines from the seventies that I bought 3 binders for and look good on my shelves, but the prices like my other old price guides are worthless, ut still fun to read. Thanks for reminding me.
@brettm Thanks for the info. Looking at the pictures I feel it most resembles some that are listed as 18th C. Chinese export. But the spout on mine seems to differ from most of these others in that it drops down and has a separate opening. Also the indentations or ribs or whatever they are called seems to be a unique feature from most of the others.
