I'm not as active as I could be on the forum, but I do collect silver too and I would advice against doing acid tests (both on silver and gold!), unless it is something that you're going to scrap anyway. The tests will damage the silver, even if it just a small area.
IF you have something really fine or antique, be patient and wait till you can find a place that does x-ray testing (XRF). I've seen to many examples of fine silver pieces that are ruined because someone was thinking dollars rather than art and filed into the piece, doing irreparable damage.

I agree fully. Nothing I have more that finding a nice piece of silver with a large grind mark. The odd part is that they grind it and still mis-identify it and think it is plated. Or try and sell it as an antique after grinding it and discovering it is silver! The best thing to do is just learn silver marks.
But sometimes they aren't marked--I just found a Spanish colonial chalice that was unmarked, and I did test that, by rubbing it against the test plate and putting the 18K solution on the mark. It was, as you might expect, lower grade silver, but still silver.
By the way, I didn't test the French bowl, which was marked both 800 and also had the small Minerva mark, which is the French 800 mark -- and it looked like silver and after decades of collecting, I know what silver looks like. But they tested it with acid when I took it in to scrap. And when it fizzed a little green, they tested it with the X-ray gun.
But the little rub mark onto the test plate, followed by the 18K acid on the mark, doesn't really hurt the piece at all. Silver plate is very rarely so thick as to give a false positive.
Or course, in Chinese antiques, paktong is common, and is still valuable as an antique, even though it isn't silver. As it is basically a nickel alloy, it will fizz and turn green. Don't ruin your paktong by testing it!

Here is a report back on the the silver bowls that got this thread going:
• Two bowls that looked silver and looked Chinese where purchased at a thrift store for $8.
• The bowls where photographed and discussed on this thread.
• The bowls were tested using the standard jewelers acid test.
• The two bowls were sold at to a dealer of Chinese art and antiques at an open air antiques flea market for a total of $230.
I was happy to make a good profit of course, leaving room for another dealer to make something is fine with me. What I really gained was a new set of tools and knowledge regarding metal testing and object identification.
