My mother passed away last summer, and now that travel is possible, I traveled back to Texas to divide up her property with my siblings. They are not interested in Oriental art, and did not want this tapestry, so I took it. My mother and father received it as a wedding gift in the 1950's, so it is at least 60 years old, but that is all I know about it--my mother always said it was an antique when they were given it, but that may not be true. I have asked Peter what it is worth, and will either keep it or sell it and split the money with my siblings, depending upon the value. But it is a beautiful thing, and I thought you might want to see it.
It 96" (8 feet) by 38" (just over 3 feet). It has nine dragons and nine phoenixes, and the dragon's expressions are fantastic! The dragons are in gold thread, and all the other decorations are outlined in gold thread. The colors are amazing, largely because it stayed in my mother's closet since they were married. I am not certain when the plastic curtain rings were added--they weren't there when I saw it decades ago. My mother must have added them, intending to hang it up, but she never did...
It has some moth damage to the red base in a few places. You can see it in some of the closeups, and the last image shows a significant hole. I think the base is silk, based on the fineness of the fibers--too fine to be wool. Moths do eat silk, although wool generally suffers a lot more. But I could be wrong.
Any thoughts on this? Late Qing, maybe?

I can't really offer an opinion, but I just wanted to say that it is lovely! Thanks for showing us and I shall be interested to hear what Peter says - as long as you don't mind sharing his opinion, of course.
I hope so too. I always think of him when questions like this come up.
Looks like various stitches have been used, that could be a sign of quality? I assume it hasn't been done by machine? Looking at the close-ups I am not sure whether it is silk, as silk usually creases easily and has a more satiny texture, but in the large photos it looks more like it may be.
Hope Peter can shed some light.
I am not quite sure what the background material is. If you look to the left of the dragon's head, on the photo that is an extreme closeup of a dragon, you can areas where the moths attacked. The cloth appears to be velvety, woven in the back with a pile on the front. If the moths didn't so clearly like it, I might have thought it was some kind of artificial material. As it is, I can think of nothing but silk that has fibers that fine, and that moths would eat--they like protein-based materials, like wool and silk.

I have been doing some reading and I think it may well be silk. I have discovered that I have a very limited understanding of the material, especially the number of different types of silk that exist or how long ago the material was discovered.
Here is what Peter had to say:

quality of the stitching and overall draftsmanship coupled with good
strong colors and generous use of gold, as well as its size (BIG), makes
this a very collectible item among the textile crowd.
The elements, including Buddhist symbols are all very well done.
...it is an Antique and was a fine gift even back 60 or
so years ago. Prior to the 1970's, giving antiques as wedding gifts was
considered to be very tasteful thing to give, and were often selected
from a family's own collection as a symbol of particular affection for
the marrying couple. As for the colors, silks can keep their initially
strong colors as long as the piece is not exposed to bright sunlight for
a very long time (centuries).

The condition is exceptional. It's obviously not really been displayed etc. Such vibrant colors. Personally I think it is 19th/20th century. In any case late Qing. Love the front facing fierce dragon.
Not sure but I think the number of dragons and Phoenix's could hold some symbolic meaning
Would look awesome framed on the wall.

It was a wedding gift to my parents in the 1950's. As big as it is (8 feet long), it may be too big to display anywhere in my house. Still working that out!
