Hi All,
I found this 6.5" tall Ginger jar last weekend, before New Mexico shut down for COVID. I have found several examples online (including one at Malka Art, @adrian) that have the same pattern, and most are advertised as being 19th century (post 1850) Qing. But a few are advertised as being Ming. Are there Ming versions of this jar, or are the sellers just trying to raise the price?
In the examples I found online, there are variations in the glaze color (mine seems to be a little bluer than most) and cobalt color (mine seems a little more washed out), and in the porcelain color/imperfections. But mine seems to fall within the range of the Qing examples. Is this a Qing ginger jar?
Also (and this is something I am really puzzled by), what is the significance of the "9" figure on the back, which shows up on every single example I found? Is it a Chinese symbol with some meaning?
Thanks, Charles
Hi,
I sold one of these, there are quite a lot around with a very similar pattern, some quite rushed, others more clearly painted, but all showing the same scenes.
I have to say, I have looked at many and never noticed that but I have just seen a few in the last couple of minutes. I think it is the sun very hastily drawn. This pattern has been copied a lot, maybe that tail got copied into it as it almost looks deliberate on some. Either that or it is a comet!
Maybe that tail helps with dating? I see these often called 18th c but I am not sure of that. I think 19th c is more likely and some possibly more recent.
I liked my jar and was quite sorry to see it go.

They are always 19th or 20th century as far is I know. The problem with kitchen Qing is that it looks so rustic that many people think it’s older. Although they were produced fast and in large numbers it’s not easy to buy these nice items, as they are mostly overpriced.

I think if this were from the Qing dynasty you would expect to see many signs of domestic use and wear - but apart from the chip , the mouth looks clean and unworn, and the footrim does not have any real signs of wear , for example lighter patches showing through the burnt surface where the jar has been scraped across surfaces.
I suppose it's possible that it was imported soon after manufacture and just put on display, without ever being used, but unlikely , imo , given that these jars held and stored stuff , like preserved ginger and tea, so were often handled .
I feel this one is probably modern (post 1950)

The art of calligraphy - and for the ancient Chinese it certainly was an art - aimed to demonstrate superior control and skill using brush and ink. Calligraphy established itself as one of the major Chinese art forms during the Han dynasty (206 BCE - 220 CE), and for two millennia after, all educated men were expected to be proficient at it.
