Hello everyone,
I would like to share this pair of vases that were generically cataloged as Kutani, 19 to 20th century.
Measurements: 35cm tal and around 22cm wide (with the handles)
I like the painting but I have my doubts and I cannot determine the age accurately. There is also this strange "cream" flaking in some parts of the glaze, more visible in the big flaw in one of the bases, is this a bad sign? I was also unable to identify the mark, I was taking a look at Kutani.org on how to identify the kanjis, but I did not reach a conclusion. On one side there is a decoration with ducks and lotus flowers and on the other there are scenes of a sage with a tiger.
I wonder if the Japanese ceramics experts on the forum could help me with the age and quality of these. I'll be very grateful.
All the best,
MB
They look period to me but I’m no pro. The bumpy head figures I see on a lot of the late Meiji.
I don't know if this helps, but the peeling glaze I think has two possible causes. One is a glaze failure, which if I remember correctly there is a page on Gotheborg, (I will try and find it to post), and can appear to look like peeling paint. The other in my case is an old cold-glaze repair that has aged/discolored and started to flake off. here is an export tankard which I have in my collection where and old repair is now showing because the cold-glaze is peeling off.
I do not know if that applies to yours but just my two cents.

Unusual looking vases. Definitely Japanese and from late Meiji to Taoshi period. So 1900-1926.
Would be very interesting to know the maker of these. I like them.
BTW fantastic and detailed pictures!
Mark
Hi Mb,
Wow, beautiful vases! Really extraordinary works of art. You may want to look at Haruna Shigeharu. I don’t know if the mark will match, just a possibility. Love the handles...and really everything.
Todd
take it with a grain of salt
Its interesting that you mention Haruna Shigeharu, I was thinking the vases remind me of some of the late 19th century exhibition pieces,
They are really quite stunning examples of technique and form, and the figurative painting is very emotive.
Check this site for other pieces from the Paris exhibition.

Hi all,
Thank you so much for the comments.
Thanks Brian for the quick answer. Jeremy: I think the case with my vases are the same as your tankard, a cold glaze repair. In fact, the signature was painted on top of this glaze and perhaps it is the reason why in one of the vases the writing was blured, Btw, nice tankard! Also, thank you so much Mark for your help with dating and your always kind words.
I've been looking at the works of Haruna Shigeharu and they really are very similar, thanks Todd for the reference. I believe that this pair of vases was produced after his style, although he died in 1913. I also found an incredible book by Shigeharu called Toki Kuzan, published in 1902 with drawing designs of ceramic shapes and objects, so nice and there are several pdf editions for free download:
