So the people I bought this from said they purchased it in Japan maybe 40 years ago. The decorations are painted except the rim decoration appears to be stamped or printed. I am horrible at dating Japanese pieces so I thought I would check with some experts as to what this thing is.
It doesn't look it in the photos, but it is 14" wide.
-Jeremy
I'm not sure whether or not it is Japanese. It looks to be a similar painting style to a piece I had Peter evaluate, which turned out to be modern, but your foot rim looks different. In any case, mine was circa 1985 (quel surpise) ca. 1985 to Present, "the decoration competently done, however the style of figural painting is not consistent with early pieces. The manner in which the mark comprising four characters is done within the double frame is of a style and quality that came into common usage during later 20th century . . . decor, post 1980's." I seem to remember from an old post that Japanese pieces did have a washed out blue some time, but my washed out blue was a recent Chinese piece. Sharon
Hi Jeremy,
I think Japanese. I see a lot of this quality decoration. Its vintage, but not antique. I would believe the 40 year story. The rounded foot rim is another sign of that time. Post 1960, other than that I don’t know how to distinguish between 60s, 70s or 80s.

Thank you, I figured it was modern-ish but the foot is what threw me off. Between the color and the shape I just couldn't place it with the decoration and the washed out color.
-Jeremy
I like the decoration of yours quite a bit more. I have seen a few pieces marked within the handle and it always threw me off.
Thanks for the visual time period reference, it will give me a pinpoint in the future especially since I am way better when I see the examples of periods.
-Jeremy
Honestly I saw it and instantly thought it would be a perfect serving bowl for spaghetti and meatballs, must have had comfort food on my mind. haha.
Hi Jeremy,
I saw that the bowl is 14”. That is enormous for this type. I have this one which is large at 11.5”, 2nd half 19th transfer-ware. Your bowl is in the same tradition, with the same basic shape. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it 😋 I would go ahead and use it for spaghetti and meatballs. The meal may taste a bit better.

@watership Your bowl is the type that Europeans copied and produced Aesthetic movement style pottery (especially in England), which I really love the brown transfer. The bullseye bottom and style places your piece at the turn of the last century, ca. 1895-1900? Both pieces lovely big bowls, but could Jeremy's be a basin at 14"? Could they both be basins that perhaps once had matching pitchers? Sharon
Hi Sharon,
Agree about Jeremy’s possibly being a basin, a 14” bowl is a monster. No idea about the pitchers, could be.
Mine has an older feel to me, maybe 1870, but your date might be right. I still have not developed a solid method for dating much of anything, other than instinct. Am still waiting for that to kick in 😋
