That’s quite large and it looks undamaged too, so I would think $500 upwards.
Birgit
I don’t know the name of this form, would just call it octagonal vase.
Birgit
@shinigami thanks Birgit I’m struggling with this vase I have had a lot of opinions up and down on this vase. Makes me feel like my bowl a lot of different opinions. Of one thing I forgot to mention is it has a lean it doesn’t sit straight up. I don’t know if that affects value. I paid $150 so $500 is good return as you mentioned shipping will be the struggle it’s super heavy almost 15 pounds.
@lotusblack There is always the dirty exception, true crud from sitting on a stand for decades, did you have to give it a hard scrub?
Hi Brian -
A good friend, who has been dealing in ceramics for 40 years, was given the advice 'Never buy a leaner' from another experienced dealer when first starting out ...
He always reminded that advice yet, once, bought a very high quality, beautiful decorated/glazed blue and white 17th century vase which leant slightly ...
I believe it took him around ten years before he found a buyer for the piece ...
Stuart
@ming1449 thanks for that bit of information. I was told by a very experienced dealer that leaning was a good sign. But I’m kind of ocd when it comes to straight lines and such I don’t want any leaners we don’t see items like this very often in Colorado it’s always export and some domestic but nothing like this it won’t take 10 years for me to sell. I did send it off to Peter to get his opinion if it comes back modern fake the lean might hurt my chances at making a profit.
@lotusblack The quality of the rendering of the panels seems disproportionately better than that of the blue cobalt decoration. Why is that?
Can you post some close up photos of the birds?
I'm with Stuart... leaners are not generally indicative of age. Remember... craftsmen were life-long students before mastering the trade, so they would have pride in most items as elaborate as your piece. Most certainly, if it leaned after firing, they'd break it and start over.
Minyao wares are a different story.... mass production with no particular standard for quality control.
Anyway... from a far, the birds looks quite spectacular... I hope they are painted, not stenciled or transfers.
@greeno107 Hey Tim thanks for chiming in the bird are all hand painted and in my opinion the brush work is pretty good quality. They line up with other comparisons from the 19th century to my eyes.
@lotusblack The photos are not crisp, but the last photo is the clearest. There seems to be some hand rendered work, but I'm not convinced it is entirely hand done... the black lines of the birds might be a stencil.
The reason for my feeling is based upon the parrot's foot. There is a sizable gap between the curve of the toes and the branch. That's strange.
And, the black feathers on all of the birds seems rather flat, but this could be the photographs.
If you would post a very clear close up, use lots of light so the photo is crisp, of the the parrot's feet and the black bird's head (1st photo).
That said, the modern enamel colors and looseness of the flowers suggests no earlier than 1990's or later.
I do think it is a rather pretty vase, so I'm hoping it's all hand rendered.
I don’t see any stenciled work on this vase it’s hand painted I’ve compared the birds to my others of the 19th century and they look correct. But I’m not saying the vase is 19th or modern but It was you that told me to look for rainbow effect in the green enamels all of the green enamel has the rainbow effect. But here is a brighter pic and rainbow effect. Now I’m not saying I’m any kind of expert but I do handle probably a good few thousand pieces a year to this day I have seen no pieces that are modern painted like this but I have seen many antiques that are. So I would personally have to handle and see one to think this is less than twenty years old.
@lotusblack I think you are right that it is not stenciled.
The vase is not 19th c design… the manner looks 1970-80’s.
Beautiful!
@greeno107 thanks Tim. I’m going to post this as soon as Peter gets back to me on his opinion as long as I double up it doesn’t matter much. I have no attachment to this item but more than likely I will list it as a 20th century piece this way I don’t have to worry about a INAD.
