I pick this vase up at an estate sale. It didn’t cost much and The panels have nice birds. But I don’t ever recall seeing a parrot in a bird scene. I know it’s not Qainlong period and 20th century so let’s get that out the way. I’m planning on reselling it to pay for the fabulous Navajo rug I purchased at same sale.
I have been doing a lot of Garniture research lately and this example was in China for the West by Howard & Ayers.
@william thanks for sharing I have seen a lot of parrot figures green glaze but never seen painted ones. I have to look into this vase a little better since I have a friend who thinks it’s a Qing vase. I thought later because the entire house was reproductions and it could still be later but I don’t want to list a piece if not confident.
I have a Qianlong teacup with a domestic scene where a bird, probably a parrot is sitting on a stand. Sorry I can’t show pictures as I’m on holiday and have no access to my picture files (one day I should change the password into one I can remember…)
I like your vase very much and think it’s late Qing. It looks large and expensive to ship, otherwise I would ask you if you would sell it to me.

A very nice parrot/other vase. Nicely decorated.
This looks 19/20th century... Nice buy.

Hi Brian and all -
The parrot motif, always seen in pairs, was used very briefly during the early Ming. It was one of the many new designs introduced at the Imperial kilns during the Xuande period, so 1426-35 …
After Xuande, it completely disappeared from the motif repertoire used in both the Imperial and private kilns, and does not seem to have been reintroduced until the 18th century …
Attached images of two very large Xuande mark/period dishes …

5/6:- D. 72. 1cm, reconstructed from shards recovered at Zhushan, Imperil kiln site in 1982 …

So the story is I saw the vases on a estate sale listing but all the pictures were blurry could only tell it was Chinese vases. I showed up at 3:30 am to get first in line sale started at 9am. No one showed up until 8:15 but mostly competitors. During this long wait period I was walking a bike path on the back side of the house and could see where everything was they had large windows on the back side looking out to open space. I did target this vase. And a Navajo rug. I would have bought other vases but I was interested in this vase. Doors opened and I was able to get to the area long enough to look all of the vases over. I thought this vase was later because nothing else was authentic rest were reproductions. John was right you have a split second to react and have to go with your gut. Tim’s advice showing up and waiting patiently. We all learn things here and find treasures as a result. I’m grateful for this. The reason for this story is I sold a Navajo rug 5 years ago my wife came home and was terribly upset I didn’t know she loved that rug I sold rugs at that time. For five years she would bring that rug up. It was a Granado red. These are very expensive to buy retail. I searched for 5 years and yesterday was redeemed and I got it very cheap like the vase. So when I told my wife I sold the old rug because she didn’t tell me she wanted it and next time to say something. She came home from working late I was cooking dinner in the kitchen two minutes later I hear a loud voice. “I Want The Rug” lol finally redeemed.
@lotusblack I have a Navajo woven by Marie Bigman in the 4 corners region that I purchased in the eighties, it had a long sea voyage across the Pacific in 1991 in a ship container mlm of household goods to Jakarta in 1991 and then a long and more crowded ship container on the return voyage.
@shinigami do you know what a vase like this might cost? And what this form might be called I’m having a hard time with finding a comparable which always makes it difficult to convince sellers. Thanks for any help
Parrots or birds similar to parrots are common subjects of jade carving from Ming to Qing or even later. It is not surprised to see parrots on pottery
@lotusblack How large is it? Or did that escape me? I have bad Wifi connection here and used up my monthly 2MB so I read entries as fast as possible

The fact that it is beautiful vase trumps having great age for me, you will have to find a worthy stand, it is large enough to be a floor vase. Did it come with a stand?
