So I purchased this bowl it is molded nice colbalt color the lip is shaped in Kangxi style. It has the blue tint with rust spots. I’m not familiar with this mark. It is thinly potted.
From the first picture, I thought it was Japanese but the base doesn't seem quite right. Could it be Samson? They did use marks like that.
I love the birds, but I am finding it hard to see the slightly jarring, central blue design as Chinese, although it is trying to be.
I think it is Japanese. My concern was the base may not be correct, but I just found this one, (catawiki) not the same as yours but it shows a similar style base which is what had made me hesitate earlier.
I thought it was a depiction of shou which is also found on japanese pieces?
here's a similar, in dish version

Congratulations Brian, looks like you found a very nice old bowl in fine condition. Sharon
I think you guys have lead me in a great direction I found a bowl with same shaped and base on Christie’s and several molded ones they are dated 17/18th century Arita. And article mentions that Japanese where using Chinese marks at this time and strongly influenced by Chinese porcelain. The best news is the vendor sold me all 4 for $75 bucks
This plate is same glaze paste and molding style showing unglazed firing holes.
This is my bowls
you bought 4? 😆
seems a nice find!
found a chinese example that might had influenced those(?)
Hi Brian,
It's a hell of nice deal for $75. They appear to be in excellent condition.
They are in my opinion Japanese arita ware cups. From the Edo period. Difficult for me to put a precise date as I don't have a extensive library to compare them with.
Beautifully rendered with the herons in flight with the lotus styled rim.
I think they are 18th century. But that's just my opinion. Others may have differing opinions.
Regards,
Mark
Really nice, Brian, especially for that price!
I have to learn more about Arita. I can only guess at Arita and these look great. Good buy, but harder to sell Japanese than Chinese, but you have managed to get a decent trade. At the very least you can sell just one to break even and have 3 for your collection and that is brilliant.
@short-dong I borrowed this from Gotheborg public domain.
Porcelain was produced in Arita for the first time in 1616 under the control by the feudal lord of Nabeshima, or the present Saga Prefecture. Arita ware is also called Imari ware because the products of the Arita kiln were mainly shipped from a nearby port of Imari. Arita porcelains of the early days were typically made in the Chinese style of the period, with deep-blue patterns on a white background, called sometsuke = "blue-and-white". In the 1640s, a new style called aka-e" was invented, characterized by bright colors and bold patterns principally in red. These two styles, "sometsuke" and "aka-e," dominate Japanese "Arita/Imari" wares. The products of the 17th and 18th centuries are typically called "Ko-imari" (old Imari) and "Ko-sometsuke" (old blue-and-white)
I believe my bowls are early Arita due to the molding and unpainted lip and as mentioned Chinese style.
