Good morning everyone! I need a little assistance. I am wanting to sell a silverware chest that I have but have no idea what it’s really called, what time period, what it’s made of or what it’s worth. I mean I am not sure why someone would have such a large collection of eating utensils. Maybe I am wrong on what it is. Anyway, it isn’t something I usually deal in but I picked it up a few years back because I thought it was very unique and beautiful. There is a water stain on the top fabric but everything else is in excellent shape. I also haven’t cleaned it in a while because I don’t want to ruin it’s integrity when I really don’t know how to clean it properly. Maybe you guys could help me figure out what it is and what it’s worth. The figures on it were made of soapstone but I tried to scratch a small part and it wouldn’t scratch like soapstone so I am thinking it is some type of bone. If anyone could help with what it is and what I should ask for it, I would greatly appreciate it. I hope everyone has a wonderful Sunday!!!!

PS, I am still trying to add photos but they are too large. Trying to figure out how to make them smaller.
I would date this piece to circa 1970's, just as China opened to the Western world. The use of Western dinner utensils and the overall design indicates it was made for export.
The large service is indicative of it being made for someone of wealth who entertains large dinner events, but unfortunately the appeal of this style of inlay cabinetry is not much in favor.
Thanks Greeno! Maybe I’ll hold on to it for 50 years or so and my children can sell it when I pass on. Hopefully by then, it may have some value! 🙂
