Hello All,
Have had this vase for a number of years and has been hidden at the back of a self, doing some tidying up and thought would post to try and establish a date for it. As you can see it is ovoid or egg shape and is about 9cm tall. The figures robes have been painted with a little care in shading to show the folds etc, still can't comment much on the faces as my copy of Mr Tommys book is still stuck at Amsterdam airport awaiting a flight to Australia nearly six weeks now. Although the glaze meets the base in a very neat line and the leaf mark is freely painted at least not quite as stiff as I have seen on some latter copies and the objects on the table are painted in that strange perspective you see on older Chinese pots I think my pot is a latter copy mainly the lack of detail and the strange painting on the back lead me to this conclusion. Thoughts would be appreciated.
Michael.
Hi Michael, I’m really bad at telling the difference between Kangxi and Kangxi revival. To me your lovely vase looks Kangxi but others might judge it better.
Birgit
Hi Michael. I think the rendering lacks attention to detail- the chess board is rather sloppy, triangular nose and lumpy hands, wishy washy cloud backside to the vase, and not a distinct piling of color.
Maybe late 19th, but I think the revival pieces are generally quite nicer and use the 4 character kangxi mark or double empty circles.
I think that artemisa leaf looks like what Ive seen on some Republic pieces or later.
Hello,
@shinigami Thanks Birgit would be very nice if your thoughts turn out to be true.
@greeno107 Thanks. Yes you have pretty much echoed my thoughts I just could not decided if 19th or 20thc I know it's not 21st as I have owned it for about 30 years.
Cheers
Michael
Like Birgit, I wasn't sure this isn't Kangxi. It looks quite nicely potted and every era will have degrees of quality of decoration. For me, the main thing against it being older is the laziness of some of the decoration, specifically the reverse as Greeno mentions and I feel the leaf may be rather chunky.
I had a quick look and found couple of similar shaped allegedly Kangxi vases also with women playing Go, one had a little lid. Should I have also come across more recent copies, though?
The decoration was less wishy-washy on the ones I found, but what was interesting for me, was reading that this game is considered one of the "four accomplishments" which I assume more cultured women were supposed to master.
I am still not entirely convinced it is a copy of the earlier period, but my indecision has helped me learn something new. 😊
Hi Michael,
Nice little item etc.
I think greeno107 is correct. It could be late 19th century or early republic period.
I was thinking about buying that book by Tommy Eklof. However 6 weeks in a holding position is very stretched but understandable at the moment.
A lot of parcels that are economy post are being held up etc. I am reluctant to buy anything unless it's sent priority express by firms like DHL.
Let us know when it arrives and what you think of it?
Mark
Hello,
@julia Every day that you learn something new is a good day.
@imperialfinegems Will do, have purchased from this book seller Eric Tonen books before with no problem so not too worried just a little frustrated.. have to be patient
Michael
PS just checked Australia post on line and it arrived in Melbourne on Friday ! so will make it out to me next week
Hi Michael,
Is this the same seller of the book?
Dragonface publishers at €120 including postage.
Mark
Mark,
Not sure I found the seller via ABEbooks but the price is about right plus shipping $20 odd, plus GST so not cheap could not find it from any seller in Australia to specialized I guess. Expect I will have fun with it and who knows with the information I might be able to make it pay for itself. Just checked Aust Post on Line and it arrived In Melbourne yesterday guess the Aust Post web site can be a bit late updating sometimes.
Michael
🤣
I noticed that the book although $20 more expensive is now in hardcover and better page quality. My old paperback was so heavily used that pages fell out and had to be glued in.
Birgit
