@greeno107 Well you were clearly right about the open bowl, enjoy your warm Florida weather after unusually cold Christmas. I only ever lived on Jax Beach in Northern Florida in the early nineteen-seventies while hubby in the Navy, which was sometimes cold in the winter, but have spent a lot of time in Sarasota, which has suffered some unusual temperatures too, sorry about your garden.

I live 1 1/2 hrs from JAX Beach, and 2 1/2 hrs from Sarasota- I prefer Sarasota for the calm waters of the Gulf, but the antiquing in both areas has proven fruitful over the years.
I own a few Thai pieces… I think I’ve shown my celadon plate, but I’m wondering….  Is this considered Sawankhalok, too?
It’s a fairly large jar I bought from a shop in Essex Massachusetts (near Peter’s neck of the woods) several years ago.
Do you think it’s old?  I guess if there is no market need for fakes, then perhaps it’s genuine… I bought it because I’ve never seen anything like it.
As I have only bowls and jars and plates I don't know about this elaborate pieces. In my books they show only simple pieces with one person. This one is either museum quality or modern but I don't know. With no market need for fakes I was talking only of the common lidded jars that your friend imported.

I understand. Thanks. Despite coming from a fairly nice antique shop, I've always assumed it was relatively modern, but I've never looked into it with serious intentions.
Here are a few examples of Sawankhalok figurines. I even found a group with an Elephant. Your piece is very nice though. Probably not from Thailand.

This looks like a more recent one to me. Do you think it’s intended to deceive? The old ones look different, in color as well as in decoration.Â

@shinigami I’m not sure but Tim brings a point of modern replicas I bought this lidded pot for two reasons the potter did an amazing job it’s a high quality bowl. And it was $5 bucks. To me it make no difference if old or new it’s a nice bowl either way.
Perhaps I should not have commented on this thread, only because I really don't know the design and construction associated with genuine Thai antique porcelains. But, since I've already stuck my foot in my mouth...
What I was trying to point out was the 'red clay' on various areas of the porcelain appeared to my eye to be similar to the deliberate application seen on Chinese fakes from the mid-20th c. My experience has taught me that genuine archeological pieces are more carefully cleaned (if possible), but perhaps a novice just digging around came across the piece.
Are there Thai porcelain fakes intended to deceive being made? I would imagine so... if there's a buck to be made selling fakes to tourists who wouldn't know the difference, it sure seems easier than digging around archeological sites (which might be regulated).
On the other hand, Brian's bowl looks quite modern, with no signs suggesting it was 'burried' or such. I would think it is of more modern construction because it would appeal to decorators looking for sleek/Asian designs for contempory decor, and not as interested in the pieces looking 'antique' and dirty as was more popular in the mid 20th c.
The subject piece, the covered jar, also seems to show extensive wear to the porcelain surface, too, much like what you might expect on a shipwreck piece. But, wouldn't this type of wear be absent in buried pieces?
Perhaps a few better photos would help, but at the end of the day, I'm not even sure of the collectability of the piece - Is it a good example of the period, or just not? I have no idea.
That celadon with crackle and all the figures, it is amazing that there are no comps, I would guess something other than Thai unless more recent, maybe Watership will know if anything similar in Thailand, the figures do not look Vietnamese, do have a Malay look, but that covers alot of ground.
