Not really sure
bottom damage
i think was an object in someone’s home with bunch of stuff
dings likely
in sport card terminology I’m thinking psa 6 to 7
if bottom damage is a big deal than a five.
I lean toward a six just looking at it.
I know sports cards ancient pottery. Totally ridiculous. I have loved bonsai pots that is how I have fallen into vases. I Mostly just see them on line. Never really get to actually see them because I never buy. I want to see one that I find. I don’t want a perfect piece. I don’t like perfect bonsai. I want to create that thing from nothing. I want to find a pot, know it is authentic and buy it flaws and all. But I want to have been smart enough to get a proper deal.
I had a trainer once that said at some point you have to stop watching and start doing.
Friday night thoughts.
Hi Sfar,
If the bowl is without damage then I personally would buy it.
It looks to be a decent size. The black mark in the foot rim is I believe a firing flaw..
If you could buy it for under $200 I think it would be a good buy. I can see this in a good retailer for $800+
I have tried to find a similar mark to your 'sunflower' but to no avail.
It's beautifully painted with a degree of high skill and as previously posted its got good age to it. So it ticks all the boxes in my opinion.
Mark
@Greeno107 & others,
The styling is similar to fukagawa but it's definitely not by said maker.
Regardless, it's important I think to take note of the quality of the piece itself. This bowl is both old & good quality in my opinion.
It would be worth every penny of $200 if one could get it for that. I would buy it for that. I like dragons!
Japanese porcelain for the most part is still depressed. Potential buyers may not bid without knowing the maker etc. I wouldn't be deterred by that.
BTW I still haven't heard anything back from my associates about the potential maker.
Mark
Mark makes a good point, so don’t take my words as any indication that the bowl is unworthy… it’s a nice bowl.
But, knowing the maker mark will ensure value to other collectors.
I can’t quite make out the size, but for comparison, I just bought this pair of bowls at a shop in downtown Beverly Hills - $240 including tax.
Depending on where you measure from, they’re about 7 inches wide x 4 niches tall.
My bowls have a nicely rendered Fuku mark, and consequently the maker may never be known with certainty.
However, the careful and detailed enamel work, the interesting floral pattern on the inside, with the reserved ‘Kangxi like’ landscape in underglazed blue on the exterior - the quality of the bowls was worth every penny.
Would I have bought them for $400? Maybe. $600? No, because the maker may remain a mystery.
A couple of very nice examples you have posted Tim from the early 20th century.
Not expensive either!
Mark
I'm thinking more and more that nice Japanese objects are a great investment right now. The quality is extraordinary for the price as compared to what the Chinese items of comparable quality go for. I keep finding nice Japanese things everywhere I go for bargain prices.
