Dear Friends (Especially Mark), I picked this little piece up. Ruth Burns purchased it in China in 1976, says her daughter, who was 17 when the family traveled there. It was supposedly an antique when it was purchased then, or at least that is what her mother was led to believe when she paid the grand sum of 100 usd for it then. I really liked it when I previewed it, so I negotiated a sale. I don't think I got out over my skies on it though. Need some advice from the expert. Will provide additional photos if needed. A very nice looking carving you have bought.
The pictures are inconclusive. It could be jade. Would need to be handled and examined.
It's on my opinion a carving from the 20th century.
Is it lavender colour or white or both? Sometimes it's difficult to photograph. Depends on the camera and lighting.

Thanks Mark, I sure liked the looks of it also. I would also be hard pressed to believe it is older than 20th C. I don't think a Chinese dealer would of sold a Qing or earlier piece in the 1970s for 100 usd. Probably more like 300 to 500 or higher even back then, if the dealer knew what he had. So, I bought it as a 20th C. piece, but I believed it to be at least mid 20th C. and genuine lavender jade. It is lavender in color, but not 100% uniform. There is alot of white mixing. How can I get it certified so I can list it on Bidamountlive? And with prices fluctuating as they do, how do I asses fair market value?

A local gemologist (not a jeweler unless he has qualifications) can or should provide you with a certificat for a small sum.
However one test you can perform is a UV. If it lights up then it's been treated. If you have a UV light give it a try. And let us know.
I forgot to mention earlier. If there is lavender mixed in with white then you have jadeite jade and not nephrite jade. Which is obviously better provided it's not treated. Hence the UV test.

It does not present as an expensive jade carving, which seems rudimentary and is it supposed to have all those scratches on the backside, maybe it looks rough from the close up photos? The carving appears more as expected on serpentine or soapstone. Was this an insert into a box or other? How did the owner use it, for display or other? Sharon

I didn't see that image with all the scratches on the back going in all directions. Nicely spotted!
Would be highly unlikely to have scratches like that on nephrite jade and more unlikely on jadeite jade.
Sometimes it's difficult by way of images especially with a level of glare.
Perhaps JT if you take a pen knife/flick knife (preferably not stainless steel or anything hardened) and gently see if the plaque scratches. Not too heavy btw. If it's easily scratched it's highly likely to be soapstone and definitely not jade.
I have never seen a jade plaque with scratches going in two or three directions. But I have on soapstone and some serpentine carvings

🧐 I shall investigate further. It has the feel of jade and sure sounds like jade when tapped with other known jade. It is also very cold to the touch. I agree that the carving is somewhat rudimentary. I think it started its life as a brooch carving. At least the daughter of the owner said it was a brooch. I purchased it as it currently is. Can't take more photos now. I'm presently out of lithium batteries. JT

@loveli4236 Please let us know the results of your investigation. I have been looking online at brooches and notice that some of them are closed back, so it is possible that they would not have polished or carved the back if it was going into a closed back setting. It could also be that a base of host rock was carved away with the jade on top. If it is natural lavender jade it will still have value regardless of the carving. Sharon
