Hey Guys, I got these recently, and cannot translate the calligraphy or positively ascertain whether or not they are both done by the same artist. They both were purchased on hand carved Zitan wood stands. The agency handling the estate had no idea. The rice bowl was smashed pretty good at some point and its Zitan stand repaired as well. The stands appear to be custom fitted and I am going to assume that the stand and rice bowl suffered a sever mishap at some point. The tea cup is in very good condition. However, some idiot tried to sand off the factory mark. Probably thinking it would make it look older? Soooo stupid!! At any rate, I can't make out the remnants of the mark on the tea bowl, and not sure how that will affect value. The rice bowl in particular is fine as frog's hair. I'm sure it killed the owner when it was broke. They took great care to piece it back together. I have next to nothing in them, so whatever they bring is pretty much profit. I just have to figure out what they are. I'm not sure if they were made in early 20th or late 20th century.

Hi Jamie,

Can’t speak to the stands but I’ve seen these patterns of eggshell with the black borders and beauties before but can’t recall where. I would believe these are dated 1940-1960 and may be products of Hong Kong or Macao. Too bad about the damage on the bowl greatly reducing it’s Value.

George

Hi Jamie,

I concur with George. Could even be a bit later.

The stand is definitely not zitan wood. It's Rosewood in my opinion.

I agree with the other comments, definitely later 20th c. For me, that green grass going all the way around tends to point to a 1950/60s date, maybe even later.

In my opinion 1950s. Partly printed (border, pattern inside) but  nice hand painted ladies and gold on the rim). I have a 1980s bowl with very similar design, but less care went into the execution.

@imperialfinegems

I was of the same impression at first. Mainly because they are newer and don't display the proper patina we are used to seeing on Zitan. However, when you drop them in water, they sink like a brick. What else could they be then? Rosewood does not sink in water does it??  JT

Hi JT,

Your absolutely correct. Zitan sinks in water. But so does Hongmu. There are numerous woods that will. If you Google search you will see examples.

If it's zitan wood. Take a cotton ball and dip it into denatured alcohol. Then wip/rub in a small area. If it's zitan the residue left on the cotton ball should be a reddish. If it's a brownish black then it's highly probable to be hongmu.

Greeno107 and @Brettm are also very good with woods. Perhaps if they log in they can post their thoughts etc.

Awesome Mark. Thank you very, very much. I was taught that only Zitan would sink in water and I learned that over 20 years ago and have believed it to be true ever since. I never questioned it and it never seemed to be questioned in the field. Wow! Once again, Thanks Mark. I will perform the per

prescribed test. Probably Hongmu. I'm ok with that. Paid 40 usd for the two items. Wow, hongmu sinks. Pretty cool.
