@sharonp here's to hoping!
I do not, I was just jesting at the markups sellers there are usually forced to place on top of their "showroom" prices, due to the hefty commission structure that RubyLane charges them to host their items.
Still not as egregious in the pricing structure as the other two large decor sites; but those are usually used for the interior design industry where contractors can justify a high fee to their clients by referencing the very highly marked up prices, then "make an offer" or contact the vendors featured on the site, and purchase at a fraction of the actual posted price - then reporting back to their (usually none-the-wiser) clients about how much they were able to "negotiate just for them" and land a nice little commission/thank you bonus.
Hey, it's the art/decor world... what can one expect? Lol
Everybody has to pay their rent somehow I suppose.
Thanks for getting back to me. I thought that was what you meant but wasn't sure.
I have been comparing prices for selling. Ruby Lane is expensive if you don't sell a high number of items, if you do it may not be so bad. You are right: the prices asked by sellers are high and I would love to know if those prices are achieved!
By "comparing prices for selling" I'm assuming you're thinking of setting up shoppe somewhere?
I did months of research when I noticed I was becoming less of a "collector" and more of a "hoarder who needs to probably start picking quality over quantity" HA.
If you'd like some of my experiences on/with each, I'd be more than glad to share.
Regards,
-JRN
More a case of exploring other options. 😊
I have been selling for 9 years, mostly on Etsy and Ebay, but lately I am finding that Etsy just seem to be looking for more and more ways to wring money out of their sellers. Now I hear rumours about them insisting sellers offer "free returns" which is simply not feasible and would make people more cavalier about buying. I am wondering if selling through the "pattern" side of things would actually be a better option than the main site, so I'm looking into that at the moment.
I had good information from Adrian ages ago about setting up an independent website, which is another option, but I haven't got around to it. If it is ok to ask, where do you sell and why?
Or anyone else come to that! It may be that I stay with a "horses for courses" approach and sell in multiple places owing to the variety of things I end up selling.
Thanks for your help. 😀
@julia
It's weird because your experience from people I've asked seems to sadly be a common one with Etsy; but having recently made an account in the past 2 or so months there after getting fed up with the inconsistency of eBay and non-payers, (originally using it to offhand "vintage" pieces I thought were fun or just "aesthetic" or ect), it's actually been my bread-and-butter now. Crushingly so, and now for antiques nonetheless.
That being said; I do spend a fair chunk on advertising; so sometimes I'm wondering if the "pay to play" of their algorithm is worth it when compared to the built in promotional tools of other larger sites..
I seem to have an atypical experience tho - and have indeed been looking more and more into Charish given how many items on my shelves I have, and the network is fairly good. Met a great seller on there today looking at some of their Kutani pieces actually to price mine..
Really all depends on what you sell and ect, and I'm a bit of a "character" so Etsy allows me to have a bit more fun with things and my customers so far have seemed to enjoy it.
(Mind me asking what your page is if you want to share? You totally don't have to though!)
Thanks for sharing your experience. I know what you mean about eBay and it is rather drab compared to Etsy.
I spent a lot of time this afternoon looking into everything and decided maybe to take down the shop, revamp it and put it back up. If things keep on the downward trend with Etsy (can't even email them anymore!), then I will look elsewhere. Being in Europe and selling to the US means I simply cannot factor in free returns, however for the time being, it is maybe better the devil you know. Especially as I am very likely going to have to move to France later in the year, the simpler everything else is the better.
I shall give you a shout when I am back up and running - or if I feel I need a sounding board!
Thanks for getting back to me!
