Hi to all,
I have the opportunity to buy this plate (53x31 cm) at an auction house, it didn't sell at the auction. They say it's Republic, looks ok for me, but could maybe someone else just have a look? I think there's no dating included in the writing. Sorry I have just this one picture.
Birgit
I recall reading somewhere to never buy anything from Asia with an eagle on it. Sorry that is all I know, but i hopw some of the more expert can try and give an opinion on this.
Hi Birgit -
Be careful, these types of plaques are extensively copied now and some are very good!
I hope someone else here can help you with the inscription.
Stuart
I searched this blog, but could not find an exact copy of the signature.
According to my translator the inscription reads ‘from Lin Wei Cheng to General Mai Tang Na’ (it sounds like a Western name, probably MacDonald!). See info on Nanchang above
Xu Zhen Xiang Shi 1921_16_32, ‘Xu Zhen Xiang Shi’ can be translated to ‘Xu’s Hall of Good Omens’ and the artist in the inscription is translated as Xu Da Sheng or Xu Feng Sheng, both well known Guangxu/Republic period artists! Neither artist has other examples of Flower and Bird patterns as these two pieces are, so am not sure which is right
And from the inscription the artist is Tang Yiting, a known Republic period painter, in Zhushan
Only alleged Republican Eagle's I could find, the second one being very sketchy.
Sorry for not being much help!
Hi Brigit,
I assume you have only 1 day to make the sale. Is it today or Monday.
Hi Short Dong -
Well done - good research and links. Hope all this is of some help for Brigit ...
Stuart
I agree with short-dong , the eagle is not a common motif on chinese porcelain , and as far as I know it does not have any special meaning or significance in China. Also I think the one you have a chance to buy is not very well-done, in the way it's painted and the colours.
tam
Thank you for your opinion and especially Short Dong for the lot of research work. My eagle plate is not the one on invaluable.com but in a local auction house, so I have 1-2 weeks to think about it.
Birgit
Short Dong, may I ask what translator you use? I have downloaded Pleco but it can’t recognize handwritten characters.
Birgit
Birgit, I don't think I would buy this. I don't know how much it is, but as Stuart says, there are a lot of plaques around claiming to be Republic, some genuine and many much nicer than this,
I would also heed Tam and SD's warning about eagles, although, I suspect if an eagle were to appear it would be more likely on a 20th c piece but for me, the main issue is the painting. Chinese artists usually make good use of space, so I am uncomfortable with the positioning of the eagle's wing that seems to be lost under the frame. It may look fine unframed, it just seems unbalanced. Also, the talons are out-stretched as though about to pick something up or land, yet the positioning makes him look as though he has fallen off that branch behind him - I feel the juxtaposition of the bird and the tree has no sense. I don't think the tree is well-done either.
Unfortunately, even if this is genuine, I would still feel the same and these little things would start to annoy me after a while. But obviously this is my personal opinion and others may interpret the painting differently. It may also look a lot better in real life. If the price is good and you like it, you could ask Peter's opinion?
Thanks for your opinion Julia. You’re right about the bird‘s gesture looking a bit strange. I don’t think it’s recent because it was part of a collection of medium quality Republic porcelain being dissolved. A typical Republic feature is that trees are painted in a rather careless way while birds are carefully painted. But I think I will skip this one, can’t afford it anyway after the London shopping spree.

I just copied verbatim from the Watersilkdragon site. These are his translations. I was hoping to get lucky and find the artists signature.
Is there a backmark on the plate. That might help. Also depending on the price, since eagles are such a rarity, and while I agree with Julia the tree looks clumsy compared to the usual republican style, the eagle on the other hand is unusually finely detailed.
Hypothetically if we can say 100% this was republican then it would suddenly be more interesting.
What you bought in London was much nicer than this plaque; those items would give me a lot of pleasure! ?
