This damage...
How much will it effect the value. Is it worth restoring and would you pay more than £40 for this.
It is about 12 inches high and a so a relatively big vase.
I just want to say, and you may recall I did want to add a Chinese Mandarin to my collection and i posted about a 18th Century Chinese mandarin bowl of fair size much more beautifully painted although cracked and it was determined to be too costly at around this price due to the damage. This was the overriding opinion of members.
I am hoping despite the damage you are more sympathetic as this is quite a large item.
That’s a rather huge damage, I didn’t notice it before. If you want to buy for investment I would say don’t. This kind of vase isn’t rare and won’t fetch huge sums in this condition.
If you just want something nice for your shelf you could buy it but have to add the restoring costs of probably several hundred £.

Thank you so much for your help with this item. I really am so grateful. The base of this vase look a a little too clumsy for an 18th century so i would not have bought this without your reassurance.Also i had not noticed the damage so the price seemed very low for a Chinese Mandarin vase so i suspected maybe it was a fake and that is why people were not interested. It was listed on ebay, and without your advice I would have passed on it.
I paid £34 including delivery for it in the end. It is a huge chunk of damage, I would not invest in restoration, but even so i think as part of my collection i can do my own repair and it will sit quite proudly on my side table.
If you can repair it yourself it was a good price. I hope you can remove the lamp fittings without further damage. It’s always nice when an item gets a chance for a second life.

Every Chinese Mandarin I have now is damaged 🙂
I have yet to get an 18th century in perfect condition. I have a very small bowl with exquisite artwork but it has a very tiny part of it, a chip that has been restored and badly painted over.
I have a 9 inch vase which has cracks.
I now have this Vase/lamp which has a big chunk missing from the rim and a crack.
I also have a large 18th century Chinese mug with a snake handle
However having these 4 pieces is worth it.
The bowl cost £5 and the Vase £18 and the Tankard £15 and this Vase £28 so in total £67 for these 4 items + postage of £15.
I know Prof Alan would not be impressed and £67 would likely get me a mint condition 18th century piece. However I am want to quickly build little collections from different era's and trends, like a 19th Canton famille rose export display, and a 18th Mandarin display and a 19th/20th Japanese Cloisonne display. A Kangxi Display, and a Ming display and Yongzhen pink famille rose display and a large 19th century blue and white display ( simply as these can be found quickly and cheaply and sometimes in good condition).
A satumsa, Kutani and Arita and Art noveau display. Some French Sevre's some Dresden and some British. I would love to get American Porcelain but the postage is too restrictive. However the British bought all of the French Sevre after Louis 15th so these are in Britain.
To complete such a collection in mint condition would be rather expensive and outside my budget. So i actually feel very very lucky to have found this 18th century vase and do not mind damage.
Edit: I forgot my favorite - Japense Imari, the rich dark red and gold and blue is my favorite.

Thank you Stuart, I am most grateful to this forum for all the help and advice. If i had more knowledge i would try give back as much as i can. I would have to agree with your caution as to haste. If one is patient, a better condition at near the same price will nearly always appear.
