Hi All,
I like this large Japanese fish bowl (almost 15" across at the widest) a great deal. When I first saw it, I was turned off by the external decoration, which appears to be repeating bamboo plants with leaves; I thought it was probably a printed pattern. But when I saw the large phoenix on the inside, I decided I had to have it. The phoenix is very well done, and looking closely at the bamboo on the outside, I realized that every single leaf is hand painted! The gilded dragons around the upper rim and the Ruyi head decorations around the mouth of the bowl are also completely hand painted and well done. The symbol on the bottom, a stream running by Mt Fuji, is the mark of Fukagawa Company. I think the quality of this is really great.
Two questions. First, the Fukagawa company was in existence from the Meiji period into the Tiasho period and beyond. This is a really nice bowl, but is it Meiji or later?
Second, there is some scale inside the bowl. I have tried vinegar, but that only works on carbonate scale, and I guess this is silica scale. Is there any way of safely removing scale from porcelain?
Thanks,
Charles
Absolutely stunning example of fukagawa porcelain.
This particular styled mount fuji mark was used from about the mid 1890's through to the 1920's.
Personally I think its late Meiji and not Taisho. Based on the decoration. Other may disagree. It doesn't really matter either way. Its the quality.
I have a similar styled pair of koransha vases.
Love the dragons and bamboo effects.
Mark
PS: Fukagawa is still in operation and i have been informed that they have meticulous records etc. So you could ask them.
Hi Charles,
I would have thought the same thing at 1st glance, printed. But you are right, of course, its hand done. Quite a bit of work went into this piece....
Beautifully done. Am not sure the bamboo and the red border above it are a perfect match for my taste, but its lovely nonetheless. I like the phoenix also.

take it with a grain of salt

Hi Charles!
I’m thinking 1970’s or later on this bowl.
I think Fukagawa continues to hand paint their works through today, and the quality is generally very fine.
However, your initial observations on the repetitious decor and the overal crowdedness of the bamboo should not be dismissed.
Looking more closely at the underglaze blue interior decoration, the lines are thick, not a lot of fine detail… a bit flat.
Compared to the Meiji example Mark posted, which shows depth of variation in color of the bamboo leaves and highly detailed gilt, mouth/neck, the differences are quite noticeable.
The mark looks odd, too. Perhaps the mark is not hand drawn.
You know… this is a tough one…
I’m looking at the decor once more - it’s good!
Was the foot rim cleaned?
I love the quizzical expression of the face forward dragon, a lovely piece. He just wants to play.
Dating fukagawa porcelain is not easy. The marks remained similar but not identical.
I could of course be wrong here but I am confident its s earlier one.
The example I posted is not fukagawa. Its Koransha scented red orchid from the 1870's. Company set up by the same fukagawa family. Mainly for export.
Mark
I did not clean the foot rim. It has a fair amount of kiln grit, but was ground after firing to give it a smooth feel. This it is pretty white.
I do love the dragons. There are four of them, 2 each facing forward and sideways. Each pair differs slightly, confirming that they are hand-drawn. Sharon, you are right--the pair facing forward does have a bit of a puppy dog look!
