I actually bought this bowl sort of by a mistake but it looks like an authentic Song dynasty example to me - or am I wrong?

Does anyone know what causes this inky bledding of the Glaze?

@avatar I would agree, it seems to be a genuine example with a nice glaze to it.

Could that "bleeding" be ash enclosed during the firing process?

with Best Regards...
Carsten

The Japanese are making some really good copies at the moment of Jun type pieces. Just like this one.

This bowl is still a fake. Reasons:

1. All Song wares, except a few now in Japan, are excavated pieces that have soil degradation on its glaze surface. Such degradation has some commonalities. Your is beyond that commonality.

2. Footring. The foot ring cutting and formation technique is distinct from a Song potters's handling.

Even those Jian bowls of Song that are now in Japan, which were not excavated but preserved for 900 yrs have air natural degradation on its surface which also has commonalities, like that of Qing wares. Such commonalities are rather difficult to fake; using acid or other chemicals or physical polishing would pollute the glaze surface and create rather different hue effect. That is why natural sunlight photos are badly needed when authentication on line is involved.

@jiawei-he since we are discussing jun things what do you think about this piece? Could it be an early Qing dynasty example based on earlier Song style or is it newer?

guan jun wares, official Jun kiln wares, are extremely expensive and rare. You nearly could not have them for some thousand USD or even ten of thousands.

@jiawei-he I thought these direct sunlight pictures would be adequate and I included shots of the base so I'm confused what else you are saying you would like to see? Maybe more close ups would help to examine glaze structure? If it has been chemically treated as you say then I would like to learn how to identify that type of work. I'll try to get more pictures later and maybe you will be able to share further insights.

John, I thought there was no photo of the base, too, until I went back and noticed the top and bottom rims are very similar. It is a very odd shape; which is the top - the thinner rim?

I don't think the bowl I posted is fake like you say  but that's just me. The bowl would not be high value.  A typical estimate at Christie's would be like $5000 - $8000 with the potential to sell a little higher than that.

Here's a similar one at Sotheby's for comparison.

And the one a the met mentioned in the lot notes.

@julia the bottom is hollowed out and the top bowl dips down part way to be suspended into the hollowed area. It really is a rather involved construction. Regardless of age, someone put a fair bit of work into this piece.
