Bought this beauty yesterday - the silver was completely tarnished… looked like a cheap brass & copper vase. 2 hours of very careful polishing, the silver now shines like new.
I left the bronze patina alone, just a gentle wash with soap and hot water. Now you can see it has a beautiful gold dust wash, which might have made it look like brass when it was tarnished.
If anyone recognizes the mark, please let me know. I thought I had seen this archaistic design with silver before, but my searches just bring up Chinese examples - definitely not Chinese.
There is a small chop mark near the larger mark - that’s probably the maker. I’m thinking the large mark is just a faux Chinese mark.

I'd like to know why you think it couldn't be Chinese?
@johnshoe The casting is completely different than Chinese work.
Also, the front has a silver inlaid cherry blossom on the mouth (not shown in the posted photos)… definitely not Chinese.
Finally, the mark with the smaller mark…. Not Chinese.
Chinese design is not unusual for Meiji works… I just can’t find this one. Frustrating as heck.
Large mark photo upside down. Imitating four characters often found on Chinese archaic bronzes:
”Zi Sun Yung Bao”
Literally: “Sons, Grandsons, Use, Treasure” or “May my Descendants Use and Treasure”

Smaller mark is a single “Mei” Chinese character for “Beautiful” As you probably know all of these characters can be found on either Chinese or Japanese works.

Would you post the kanji character for ‘mei’?
Perhaps I can find other examples by searching some Japanese search engines.

There looks to be diagonal strokes on the ‘legs’ of the character… and is that a wavy line below the character?
It’s so small… this is the best photo I’ve been able to capture.
Could be just a flourish? Did you know the upper part is a sheep (see the horns) and bottom is the character for large. The ancients must have thought big sheep were attractive?
@gfhandel Maybe... I'm treading into uncharted territory. My knowledge of marks in general is moderately weak, and with bronzes, nearly zero.
A sheep? It does look like a sheep or goat. You know... in this instance, I've been studying the mark not the design, so I just assumed the design was based upon the Chinese taotie archaic mask, which I think is a zomorphic and mythical design of a bull or sheep - guess it depends on the direction and shape of the horns?
Again... way outside my knowledge area, but I'm really please you like the piece. I honestly bought it just to sell it - my Meiji collection is more traditional Japanese Meiji forms/motiffs.
I just wanted to be sure I could accurately describe it. At this point, I think it is of very good quality of the Meiji period with an unknown maker (sadly). I've gone through about 100 or more auction listings of silver mixed metal vases... nothing like it turns up.
