Hello all!
My wife and I have recently started collecting Japanese and Chinese pottery. While out scouring antique shops, I came across this interesting little jar (maybe about 5-6" wide, 3-4" tall) I'm not very knowledgable in Korean pottery, but this certainly appears to be old with light bits of wear and damage that seam old as well. I was really intrigued by the rough nature of it, especial the crack in the lid that appears to have either happened in the kiln or before firing, and it was used anyway. The one blue/green dab of glaze in the lid is interesting as well.
Could this actually be a 15th century piece? Is it Korean? Is it more likely to be some modern form of studio pottery that got mixed into an Asian Antiques lot?
Thanks in advance for any insight, I was tempted to purchase it, but I wanted to make sure I wasn't over paying too much.
With things like this, until you know for sure it is wise to ask for help like you have done. Since this is your first post I would like to say welcome! I think the pot does look to have some age but as to origin I am not sure other than it does look likely to be Asian. Depending on what other forum members have to say, you might want to send it to Peter through his ID assistant service and for $12 you will get his expert assessment. John
Welcome to the Asian art world. You must be very cautious of dealer claims. A dealer not all but good amount will most likely bait you. Korean celadon is a very hot market and old pieces can be very valuable. I don’t believe yours is Korean why I say this is Korean celadon is very refined and is likely to be embellished. Now on the other hand Vietnamese celadon is not as refined and does not get the same attention as Korean. But it’s hard to tell because we really need a profile picture put it on the table and give us a horizontal picture so we can judge the form.
After a lot of internet searching I think I've honed in on this being Thai Sawankhalok Celadon, perhaps 14th-16th century. I definitely agree that the style doesn't match the refined and cleaner Korean Celadon, and it seems unlikely that a piece with this level of cracking in the lid would be valued. The shape in particular is what led me to Sawankhalok, the profile and size is very very similar to these examples I stumbled across:
The stand out similarities are the overall jar shape, the quality of the stoneware vs porcelain, and the swirl pattern on the inside bottom of the jar.
There is a museum in Scotland that has a few examples of Thai celadon with deformities that appear similar as well.
Thanks for the guidance so far! I'll probably go back to look at it again now that I have a sense of what it could possibly be.
Some pictures from the side would be needed as Brian already said. There seems to be underglaze black decoration. Sawankhalok jars have a typical form and decoration, but I don't think they are worth $225, no matter what they say on Ebay.
Here are two examples of Thai jars, maybe your piece looks similar
