Is this ok for late 18th century? Thanks, Todd
take it with a grain of salt
Hi Todd,
I don't know, but my instinct is maybe not, but I know very little about 18thc Japanese wares. I will tell you what I am thinking and you can see if it tallies with any of your thoughts as obviously, you have it so it is easier for you to see if it looks/feels right
The shape looks ok, I think.
I liked the inside, I felt more convinced by that, although I have some concern at lack of wear if this is a rice bowl and I would want to be sure that this is how the Japanese might have depicted a butterfly at that time.
The outside seems quite a chaotic pattern. Is the brown colour gilding? I would normally expect to see some wear to the enamels but there doesn't appear to be much in the photos. My main concern is that shade of blue - it could be my monitor or the photo. I would also want to check the noughts and crosses border to see if it was used then. It seems quite slapdash given the intricacy of the main pattern.
So, those are my thoughts. Hope someone can help you further.
Julia
Hi Julia,
What made me think it might be late 18th was this ebay post. The piece is very similar in many ways. The coloring, the red and orange insignia in the center, the gliding around the top edge. The ebay bowl has underglaze blue, mine is all emamels, so that is a major diffference. Of course, I have no verification that the ebay item is indeed 18th century. I think its in the newsletter, so that gave me some confidence.
I have quite a few late Meiji rice bowls, they are fairly common and not terribly valuable. This one has a different feel than those. Am not really sure its older though.
You bring up so many good points...things I would not even think of checking...but now I am. I actually have four bottoms and one top, unfortunately. I went back to the shop today and turned it upside down looking for more lids...no luck. I did pick up a small cloisonné cup though, will make a new post to inquire about its age.

Curiously, this very different-looking rice bowl I have is basically the same pattern. The red thing on top of the lid is a butterfly, I now realize. I don’t know the age of this one, although surely its not as old as the other. It is odd in general, one reason being the presence of full decoration under the lid...

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you, Todd, but I have been scouring the internet and at last! Success! I have found noughts and crosses on an early piece. The pattern is called marabatsu. Have a look, the style is gold imari and can be gold and iron red with splashes of colour. Whether that blue is ok, I still don't know but it all sounds very encouraging:
Wow, you certainly did find verification on the naughts and crosses! Thanks so much, Julia. So, that practice goes back at least as far as early 18th. Marabatsu is a new word for me, also. Those early 18th c items also have a shinier glaze than I would have thought. Very pristine examples.

Naughts and crosses equals hugs and kisses. I like them, no matter how old they may be.
Thanks Julia, it is a fine article with lovely things and to me they look like your bowls.
