Hi,

I purchased this beautiful Imari vase but I cannot tell it’s origin. It’s very finely done with underglaze cobalt blue with gold and red paint but I have a feeling it may be European. Please help!

Thanks!

@trents,

It's Japanese Imari from the Meiji period 1868-1912.

It's a beautiful example. Looks to be in excellent condition.

Nice buy!

Mark has it pegged , the 1860 dating on the label would be pretty close in my view. I see many of the ilk  at the better antique shops ranging from $150 to 300 Canadian (about $250 US).

@imperialfinegems

Awesome thank you!

I would suggest it's worth considerably more than $250 usd due to the size, design and mark.

may I ask what you think this should bring? I’m planning on putting this in auction and would like to know what reserve to set. Thank you!

@trents,

Auctions are a funny place. They like to set very low reserves in order to guarantee a sale. For obvious reasons.

I would set a reserve of about $250. It's worth imo about $1,000. It's beautifully decorated and looks to be in excellent condition. If it's been repaired or damaged then that will impact the price substantially.

These types of wares are akin to fukagawa/koransha kiln. Very desirable to the right buyer. I have a couple of them. Fukagawa is still on operation today.

Maybe list it for sale on bidamountlive rather than a provincal auction.

Just my thoughts my friend.

It's definitely got a fukagawa look to it. But it not marked as such. Perhaps it's under the sticker.

Anyway if you wish to sell it then put a reserve of $250 and hope for the best. If I had it for sale then I would be asking $1000 aud.

BTW what the size?  It looks about 12-14 inches.

@imperialfinegems

That's wonderful! Its 15" tall with no damage whatsoever. I will seriously consider listing it on bidamountlive.

Thank you very much for your insight!

It is a beautiful vase. I can see why it is labelled French, it is very like Bayeux pieces. I feel the glossiness, the base, the way certain elements (eg phoenix, railings) are done, don't look like 19th c Japanese.

Wow, $1000us, maybe I should start buying them up at $250us😁. Only problem is I tend to keep things rather than selling them off.  Fifteen inches is large I most often see them in the eight to ten inch size.

@trents,

Hi Trent,

After reading the post by both Martin and Julia I have once again examined your vase.  This time on a, larger screen They both think it's French porcelain. As does the label apparently!

I know nothing about French porcelain but on a closer look the styling is not quite Japanese. Especially the way the flowers etc are depicted. Also the gilding along with the the Phoenix.

I believe now that it's japonisme porcelain vase styled on works by Fukagawa/Koransha but made probably in France.

I did just now viewed a number of japonisme vases/other (via a Google search) made in France during the second half of 19th century. I saw similar traits with the foliage. Owning Japanese porcelain was the rage during the later 19th century. So not surprisingly others tried to produce their own versions.

This does not detract from its beauty. It's a really nice example of French porcelain in the Japonisme style.

I still believe it's of the date.

As too value I don't know anything about values of French porcelain.

Good detective/eye work by Martin and Julia. I should have viewed it more closely. I just quickly saw the similar traits to fukagawa and instantly thought it was.

@ronm,

Hi Ron,

The price I quoted was in Australian dollars. Which equals about $700 usd today.

Have just seen your post, Mark!  I posted at the same time.  I only came across French Imari after moving here and my first pair I would have sworn was edo Imari. 😊

Here is a Bayeux base for comparison and photo of another  example (pair) which show the similar glossiness. If the vase was manufactured by them, it may well be first half of 19th c.
