Recumbent ram, slightly curved to one side. About 5cm long from nose to tail.

Just calculated the specific gravity to be:
61.28g / 21cm3 = 2.918
Which according to https://www.asianart.com/articles/hoffman/index.html is a strong suggestion that it is nephrite.
Color and transparency seems right for nephrite as well.
I am reluctant to perform a scratch test as I am thinking this might be somewhat valuable?
Picked it up off ebay recently... from an estate sales picker in Vancouver, BC, Canada. They had it listed all wrong... no mention of jade or nephrite... sold as "carved stone animal" essentially. Didn't even take proper pictures of the piercing.
Vancouver has one of the largest/wealthiest groups of Chinese expats living abroad... so I am hopeful this is not made yesterday?
I've studied a bit of small jade animal carvings... and I've never seen a rams horns done as nicely as this one.
The nostrils/face are very well done as well imho.
What do you all think of it?
I am also curious if I should clean it? Looks like there is dirt/dust stuck in between all of the small crevices? It seems like if I cleaned it there would be less definition to the smallest cuts, like the hair on the bottom of the hooves, tail, etc.
And why was this ram produced? What is their purpose? Are they toys? Pendants? Good luck charms? Worry stones?

You have posted very detailed images etc.
In my opinion it's nephrite jade carving. The carving is modern. As in modern drilling is evident.
It's use is possibly a play thing or hand toggle of sorts.

How modern would you estimate this piece to be?
And where do you see modern drilling being the most evident? Or is the entire thing obviously drilled with electrical power?
I suppose I thought it was older because most of the carved jade being offered for sale through ebay from china these days has much more rigid lines/edges than this.
And I can't seem to find any flat surfaces on it, not even the bottom.
They had treadles/drills for thousands of years. How can one be sure it's made with a modern electrically powered drill?
(Not saying you are incorrect! I am genuinely curious! As I plan to look for more of these little guys!)

Do you think this piece was created to deceive, perhaps? A fake of an older work?
I know nothing about Jade/nephrite/chinese art. Just trying to learn!

Your carving is modeled on the examples from christies.
It's obvious from the tooling marks that it's done very recently. In the last 20 years or so.
The quality of the jade itself is low.
One way of determining if it's old or modern is to use a loupe. If you see chipping (minute) on either side then it indicates a fast drill.
Also look at theme piece then carefully compare it to the one from christies. One is quickly carved. The other is not.
No it's not made to deceive. Perhaps the seller maybe. I don't know.
It's value as a modern interpretation is low as in about $100.

I will be much more careful to observe pieces that I acquire in the future!
Thankfully I only paid $60 CAD for this piece... so I should at least be able to get my money back I hope... but I don't think I'll be selling it until I can find a real one to replace it! It's still a nice copy to inspire me to keep looking imho! 🙂
