I’m very interested to find out what this says. Its an unusual amount of writing.
Thanks, Todd

Hi Todd -
This appears to be a Japanese version of the famous poem 'Ode to the Red Cliffs', written in 1082 by the great Chinese polymath Su Shi (1032-1101) who lived during the Northern Song dynasty ...
The poem described a trip he made with friends on the Yangtze river, which took them past the purported site of the Battle of the Red Cliffs - winter 208/9 ...
This motif composition and calligraphy was very popular on Chinese late Ming/early Qing ceramics - if you Google you will find examples of such ...
George will, hopefully, be able to provide some help with a translation of the script ....

Hi Todd -
Some images attached for comparison:-
1 - Japanese dish from Robert McPerson
2 - Bowl in the British Museum
3 - Brush pot, sold at Sotheby’s
4 - Large vase, sold at Christie’s London, 6 November 2012.
Hope these help ...
Stuart
Stuart,
Thanks so much, that is really cool. You certainly know your stuff...
I will be taking a look at your links, I appreciate your time. I know mine is not comparable, but I can see what its based on, so its very interesting.
I don’t have anything quite like this charger, but I know lots of script always makes a piece more fun, so I was excited to find it at the bottom of a stack of about eight to ten plates of similar size. They are quite heavy... Of the eight or so, two were old. The other is more common, but is pretty enough, not a bad thing either.

A translation of the complete poem (from Gotheborg)
"Five hundred years on, the journey continue.
Ray of water float into the sky, just as before.
Wandering tonight, moon is above the eastern hill.
Like in a trance, the year of RenXu, the season of Fall
Have a friend to catch fishes, down Red Cliff.
Nobody is to carry wine, out of sandbar of yellow.
Now myself, the riverside and thousands of mountains, all in silence.
A lonely crane is crossing the water, just above the little boat"
Could the mark be a Japanese version of Xianfeng? If it is, the dating would be viable I think, 1851-1861.

The blue mark is nice, but what does that black mark say, it looks like it was made with a Sharpie indelible marker (maybe by a shop owner)?
Thanks to Stuart for the identification and to Kaolin for providing the translation. Amazing to see the entire poem written on a plate and the dark cobalt stands out. As for the marks on the bottom, the black sharpie mark seems to be either owner or location mark “West blank” not sure of the blank character. The small cobalt characters are “Made by Otani”.
A really unique item.
George
I think that water bucket I posted in another thread is Otani ware too. I bought two today in the same shop? Not a coincidence, maybe. Not sure its also Otani, but it sure seems to be. I’ll put a link in the other thread. Never even heard of Otani before today...

Hi Todd -
Just came across this description of such pieces and there history within a publication by the Princessehof National Museum of Ceramics, Leeuwarden, the Netherlands ...
As with George, a very rare if not unique item - just goes to prove what ‘treasures’ can be unearthed whilst ‘rummaging through’ things!!😉🙂 ...
Stuart
Todd, your second plate may be of the more common type, but it is very nicely done compared to many others.
Hi Stuart, thanks so much. You never know what you will find, I agree. Keeps me busy.
Hi Julia, it is nicely done, isn’t it? My 1st thought was that the subject matter wasn’t anything special. But the artwork is intricate and must have been time consuming. A pretty thing overall.

There is this past lot on catawiki. Its the most similar I’ve found.

Hi Todd,
It's really a beautiful charger/plate you have bought. Looks like a great buy and in fantastic condition for probable Edo period. 😊

The art of calligraphy - and for the ancient Chinese it certainly was an art - aimed to demonstrate superior control and skill using brush and ink. Calligraphy established itself as one of the major Chinese art forms during the Han dynasty (206 BCE - 220 CE), and for two millennia after, all educated men were expected to be proficient at it.
